The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) has confirmed that around 40 firefighters are tackling a ‘large fire’ in a building at a landfill site owned by Viridor in Dunbar, East Lothian.
The fire was discovered in the early hours of the morning (22 January), in a building where waste is stored before being landfilled. Up to 300 tonnes of waste may have been involved in the fire, authorities say.
The fire service confirmed that crews were called to the site, which is around 25 miles to the east of Edinburgh, at 2:36 this morning. Six crews remain on the scene to continue to tackle the blaze.
A spokesperson for SFRS said: “Around 40 firefighters are currently at work tackling a large fire involving domestic waste at a landfill site in Dunbar.
“Operations Control mobilised a number of resources to the scene after the alarm was raised at 2.36am on Tuesday, January 22.”
Incident
Initial reports had suggested that the fire had affected Viridor’s nearby energy recovery facility, but Viridor has confirmed that the ERF has not been involved in the incident. The landfill site deals with around 600-800 tonnes of municipal waste per day.
Viridor added that no-one had been injured in the blaze, and that the landfill remains closed while the Fire Service continues to address the incident.
A spokesperson for Viridor said: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service currently has six fire crews on site dealing with the fire in a building where waste arriving on site is stored before it is landfilled.
“No one has been injured and there is no risk to public health. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency has been notified.
“The site remains closed to allow the Fire Service to complete its work.
“Viridor confirms that the separate energy recovery facility at Dunbar is unaffected.”
