Firefighters are continuing to tackle a blaze at McGrath Group’s materials recycling facility in Hackney Wick, East London, more than 12 hours after it broke out.
London Fire Brigade was called to the plant on Hepscott Road at approximately 11.30pm last night (12 October), with crews from Leyton, Stoke Newington, Homerton and Bethnal Green attending the scene.
A warehouse containing around 15,000 tonnes of mixed household waste is still alight, with 21 firefighters and four engines remaining on site. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
Smoke
Smoke from the blaze is blowing across the A12 road and drivers have been urged by London Fire Brigade to take extra care. Residents in the area are also advised to keep windows and doors shut.
Originally specialising in skip hire services, McGrath Group is a family-run business which employs around 180 staff providing mainly commercial and construction waste recycling services across the South East.
The company operates two fully permitted MRFs in London and Essex which operate seven days per week on a 24-hour basis.
When contacted by letsrecycle.com, McGrath Group declined to comment.
