FCC Environment has been awarded a contract worth up to £33 million for the treatment of residual waste on behalf of East Lothian council.
The contract, which runs for a total of ten years, will see FCC handle between 25,000 to 35,000 tonnes per year of municipal waste from households, businesses and recycling facilities in the county.
East Lothian’s waste disposal work had previously been carried out by a framework of suppliers which included the waste management firm Viridor, but will switch to FCC upon beginning the new deal in November 2019. The council, in the east of Scotland, has around 44,000 households, spread across towns including Musselburgh, North Berwick, Dunbar and Haddington.
Under the contract, waste will be transported for treatment at FCC’s 195,000 tonnes per year capacity energy from waste plant at Millerhill on the outskirts of Edinburgh.
The £142 million facility is currently undergoing final commissioning, and once completed, will also be processing around 135,000 tonnes per year of waste from Edinburgh and Midlothian councils. It is expected to be fully operational from this summer.
Waste is to be transferred out of the county boundary despite the development of Viridor’s Dunbar energy recovery facility within East Lothian. The facility is tied into a contract to handle waste from North Lanarkshire, East Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire, North Ayrshire and Renfrewshire councils.
Commenting on the new contract, an East Lothian council spokesperson, said: “Following a procurement exercise, the council has appointed a new contractor for the recovery, treatment and final disposal of mixed municipal waste. We look forward to working with the contractor in due course.”
Aberdeenshire
In further contract news, Enva Scotland, formerly William Tracey, has renewed its work to handle and sort mixed recyclable waste on behalf of Aberdeenshire council from households, recycling centres and commercial premises.
The contract, which runs for 12-months up to the end of February 2020, will see Enva Scotland handle a total of 15,500 tonnes of material including paper and cardboard, plastic bottles and pots, tubs and trays, and metal cans and tins, with a total value of up to £400,000.
As part of the agreement Enva will process the waste at its Linwood materials recycling facility.
