FCC Environment has partnered with Provectus Remediation Ltd on a project to treat up to 500,000 tonnes of contaminated soils and oily wastes per year, on the site of a former quarry in the West Midlands.
The site is located at Rowley Regis, near West Bromwich, and allows for the treatment of contaminated soils from construction processes using physio-chemical and biological treatment techniques, the companies have revealed.

The site had previously operated as a quarry for dolerite – a stone used in road-building.
Remediation specialist Provectus, which has been in operation for around 25 years, is based in Chelmsford, Essex, and works on projects including the restoration of former landfill sites and mineshaft grouting and capping works.
Under the joint FCC project contaminated materials will be sent to the Rowley Regis facility for recovery and re-use in the 6.1 million cubic metre quarry void – which is being restored over a period of 25 years.
Bioremediation
Contaminated soils will be treated using a bioremediation process – which involves the degradation of contaminants using microorganisms.
According to the companies the facility will be able to accept a wider range of wastes than those permitted to landfill. Materials accepted at the sites will include contaminated soils from construction applications, waste from petroleum refining and other oily wastes.
Chris Ellis, operations director, FCC said: “This is a strategic development for FCC to allow us to recover unused quarry void and restore the site using a sustainable alternative to landfilling that will significantly support the regional construction market.”
Provectus managing director, Steve Langford added: “We have been working with FCC for some time and this investment is the first development with our partner to provide the UK construction market with a network of local soil treatment facilities.
“Clients want to continue developing brownfield sites by disposing of wastes to allow construction to commence. They require a simple, cost effective and long term solution with a partner they can trust.”
