Excellence in Innovation Awards shortlist announced

By 27/08/2021News

The 10 shortlisted finalists, each pioneers in their own field, for the Excellence in Innovation Awards were announced today (27 August).

The Awards, which are held in conjunction with the Letsrecycle Live trade show, celebrate the most innovative products, services or technologies making a positive impact on the resource and recycling sector.

A table showing the shortlisted companies, sorted in alphabetical order, can be seen below. More details of each shortlisted finalist’s entry can be found at the bottom of the article.

In 2019, those recognised included Contenur UK, the Reconomy Group and TOMRA Sorting, among others (see letsrecycle.com story).

The overall winner of this year’s award will be announced at the now sold-out Letsrecycle Live Reunion Dinner in Stratford-upon-Avon on 15 September, which is raising money for Child Bereavement UK.

All 10 shortlisted finalists will also exhibit at Letsrecycle Live, to be held from 15-16 September at Stoneleigh Park, near Coventry.

With five conference theatres and more than 100 speakers sharing insight across the two days, the free show delivers an informative programme offering attendees a unique chance to hear the latest developments and updates in an ever-changing industry. This year, the show is also co-located with the Demolition Expo, organised by the National Federation of Demolition Contractors (NFDC).

Air Spectrum Environmental: ecotech battery-powered misting equipment

Earlier this year, Air Spectrum Environmental introduced the “industry’s first” battery-operated misting system: ecotech, born from a drive to provide a sustainable solution to dust suppression, ensuring no harmful emissions, reduced noise compared to a generator to ensure minimal disturbance, and a full day’s power from one charge.

This allows Air Spectrum Environmental still to meet their customers’ needs whilst supplying attractive eco-friendly alternatives for the industry.

Custom Tek: laser weighing

The traditional method of weighing in the recycling industry is to use a belt weigher fitted under a conveyor. Custom Tek says it gives “reasonable results” if product is not stuck on the conveyor or on the idlers, a loadcell is not broken, the speed sensor turns, or the belt weigher is calibrated regularly.

Custom Tek’s LASER weigher is not affected by any of the above as it is mounted over the conveyor. It fires 16 lasers down at the material (3,200 p/sec). There is no direct contact with the material on the conveyor which means there is no ongoing maintenance.

Dennis Eagle: the eCollect

The all-electric, 27-tonne eCollect provides a zero-emissions alternative to our market-leading diesel RCV. It is designed to be at least as efficient, safe and cost-effective over its lifetime.

As the first fully integrated eRCV produced by an OEM, the body, chassis and lift are designed to work together, providing the benefits of one-stop-shop support.

ESE World: eight decades of championing the circular economy

ESE World has manufactured intelligent storage solutions for waste and recyclables for over 80 years – and say they were the “first” to do so with a sustainability-first, circular-economy-driven approach.

ESE World produces containers from recycled material that are of the same quality as their virgin counterparts offers a takeback scheme for end-of-life units, to be reprocessed, creating future-proofed solutions.

Go Plant Fleet Services: Go Plant Fleet Services working with Omnia Smart Technologies

Go Plant Fleet Services is working with Omnia Smart Technologies to bring an overall offering to councils and waste management companies focusing on intelligent collections, fleet electrification and managing of driver compliance monitoring.

Go Plant Fleet Services and Omnia offer fully bespoke solutions tailored to the systems that different councils and waste management companies already have in place, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Kelpack: compactor manufacture and maintenance

Kelpack is one of the UK’s leading compactor manufacturers. In addition to its standard range of compactors and vertical balers, it also offers a fully bespoke service which allows for optimum efficiencies for customer sites, maximum recycling output and minimal carbon emissions. It has developed its KelConnect technology which allows for remote managing of compactor bin levels and sends alerts when the bin is nearly full/full, saving costs on wasted journeys, ensuring bins are full and reducing carbon emissions.

Kiverco: launch of the Ks 615

The new offering from Kiverco is ‘patent-pending’ as an entire plant is designed on a single skid frame chassis – a “first of its kind” globally. The unit is easily loaded onto a trailer, transported to a site, driven into position and then off-loaded using a simple hydraulic jacking leg feature. The plant is so simple to install that it can be delivered, off-loaded, commissioned, and operational within a few hours. The plant has a ‘plug and play’ power connection and may be powered by mains electricity or generator power depending on the customer’s preference.

Refuse Vehicle Solutions: the RVS solution for a net zero carbon future

In collaboration with Dutch electric conversion experts EMOSS, Refuse Vehicle Solutions has developed a “pioneering electric-powered vehicle” in response to the government’s plan to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

The E-One is a safe, sustainable, and cost-effective solution that Refuse Vehicle Solutions says “can’t be beaten”. Powered by lithium ferro phosphate (LFP) batteries, the e-One electric refuse vehicle offers a vast range of benefits. It allows conversion of existing vehicles instead of replacing them and provides zero noise and pollution.

Scarab Sweepers: supporting customers’ transition from twin to single engine sweepers

For over four decades, Scarab has offered a wide range of truck-mounted sweeping solutions, which come in a variety of body sizes and drive types, to help customers achieve exceptional cleansing results in some of the world’s toughest environments.

Scarab’s mission, which lies at the core of their business vision, is simple: to design and manufacture the most environmentally focused range of sweeping solutions. While still offering a selection of twin-engine solutions for some markets, Scarab claims to be the “pioneer” of the truck-mounted sweeper powered from a single-engine and says the ongoing success of this system is a seal of their commitment to the environment.

Tyre Boss: forward-thinking cushion solid tyre development and service

Tyre Boss takes a “proactive approach” to developing and innovating incredibly long-lasting cushion solid tyres and providing service solutions that save time and money for companies in the recycling sector.

By working closely with the TY Cushion Solid tyre factory, Tyre Boss helped develop compounds that not only give outstanding life but provide a soft and comfortable ride, reducing the wear on machines. The TY cushion solid tyres also have a very low rolling resistance and in turn use less fuel and are a perfect partner for development of electric machines for the future.
