Leading wood waste processing business Hadfield Wood Recyclers has been acquired by the services company Enva – the two firms have announced today (20 December).
The acquisition sees Enva grow its presence in the UK market – complementing its ties to the Scottish waste management company William Tracey, as well as other businesses including Wastecycle and Blue Sky Plastics Recycling (see letsrecycle.com story).
In acquiring Hadfield Wood Recyclers, Enva takes ownership of what is one of the UK’s longest-established wood recycling businesses, having operated since 1980.
Hadfield currently reprocesses 300,000 tonnes of waste wood a year, with sites at Tilbury, Manchester and Middlesbrough – where it operates under the UK Wood Recycling (UKWR) name.
Wood is handled by the company on behalf of waste businesses and local authorities, and is processed into products including animal bedding, through the company’s ‘easi’ range, as well as being supplied as a biomass fuel, and for use in the panel board market.
Commenting on the acquisition, Tom Walsh, chief executive of Enva, said: “We are delighted to have purchased Hadfield. The manner in which the business takes a waste material and manages it back into a new product – effectively creating a second life and displacing finite natural resources – is completely aligned with the strategy and ethos of the Enva business.”
Enva
Enva is majority owned by Exponent Private Equity, which acquired the DCC group – owner of William Tracey and WasteCycle – in 2017 in a c£200 million transaction. The companies have subsequently begun rebranding under the Enva name following the move.
The company also has operations in Ireland, in both hazardous and non-hazardous waste services, and employs around 1,100 staff in total.
Niall Wall, Enva’s executive chairman, added: “Enva has recently rebranded all of its businesses across the UK and Ireland. Hadfield, the latest in a series of important acquisitions, is in line with our growth strategy of acquiring quality resource recovery businesses and is another significant step in the group’s evolution.”
Geoff Hadfield, who founded Hadfield Wood Recyclers in 1980, said the ‘time was right’ for the business to become part of a bigger entity.
He said: “Enva is a well-respected company with a clear purpose. There are obvious synergies between our respective businesses that will allow us to take the processing of waste wood to the next level. The whole team are delighted to be joining Enva and are looking forward to the future.”
The shareholders of Hadfield Wood Recyclers were advised by GCA Altium’s Simon Lord, Adam Sivner and Matthew Furness.
Also commenting, Barry Coughlan, managing director of Enva, said: “This is a very exciting time for our business. The acquisition of Hadfield extends our existing suite of material recovery solutions and complements our current wood recycling operations. We look forward to working with the team and welcoming Hadfield and its employees into the Enva family.”
