Commercial waste business Ellgia has announced a partnership with Ferrybridge Multifuel 1 (FM1) for a “spot contract supply” of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) to create energy from waste.
On this occasion, the spot contract will see Ellgia deliver one or two daily loads of RDF, with a view to potentially supplying more to FM2 in the future.
The RDF which Ellgia will deliver to FM1 is pre-processed at its Scunthorpe depot and will be used by FM1 to generate electricity. Ellgia say this provides a local outlet for RDF which supports the company’s “cradle to grave “philosophy for managing waste.
FM1 is the £300 million energy from waste project in West Yorkshire, which is run by Multifuel. It is one of two plants which Ferrbybridge Multifuel operates. The other, FM2, is set to be operational in February 2019.

The FM1 power station produces electricity by burning waste derived fuel from various sources of processed municipal solid waste and commercial and industrial waste. FM1 has an installed electrical export capacity of 68MW. The plant takes fuels from across Yorkshire and the wider region.
Ellgia are based in Cambridge but also have operations in Scunthorpe.
The company said it has made “significant investment” into the Scunthorpe site, providing waste processes which extract valuable recycling commodities.
” This is achieved through numerous mechanical treatment processes that eventually turn the remaining residual waste into useable waste derived fuel.”
A company statement from Ellgia said: “This offtake partnership allows Ellgia to further enhance its zero waste to landfill credentials from its major waste hub in Scunthorpe, demonstrating the commitment to moving waste up the Hierarchy. This partnership is part of Ellgia’s strategy in response to ever growing pressures on the waste and recycling industry, to provide long term environmental and sustainable waste destinations.”
