By 01/06/2020News

Fire crews remain at the scene of a fire which broke out yesterday (31 May) afternoon at a recycling facility in Shawhead, near Dumfries, owned by Solway Recycling.

At the height of the blaze, 45 crew members from the Scottish Fire and Rescu Servicee and nine appliances tackled the fire. Crews were first called to the scene at 4pm on Sunday.

There have been no reports of injuries and three engines remained at the scene this morning (1 June).

The facility primarily recycles farm films including silage wrap and also manufactures agricultural equipment.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted 4.02pm on Sunday, May 31 to reports of a building fire at a recycling centre in Shawhead, Dumfries and Galloway. Nine fire appliances and a number of specialist resources were mobilised to the scene, and crews worked to tackle and contain a large fire which had spread across a nearby dwelling and a number of outbuildings. Crews remained on scene throughout the night and into the next day, and the fire was fully extinguished on the afternoon of Monday, June 1.”

The fire originated in a two story building on the farm, where dark clouds of smoke could reportedly be seen by residents for miles around.

Dumfries Police  asked members of the public to stay away from the area in order not to interfere with the efforts of the emergency services.

The family who owns the business also live on the site, nearby to where the fire originated.

Solway Recycling

On its website, Solway Recycling describes itself as “a pioneer company in collecting and recycling waste agricultural plastics”, and was set up by owner Roy Hiddleston 20 years ago.

The family run business operates a bin and liner’ system which segregates different materials found on farms, so farmers can recycle waste with minimal disruption.
