Cory to invest in Thames barge fleet

By 20/05/2019News

Cory Riverside Energy has announced it is investing £7 million to modernise its barge fleet, used for transporting waste along the Thames to its Belvedere energy from waste plant.

The money will see an initial 14 barges being built in Liège, Belgium,  and transported to the UK, and forms part of plans by Cory to replace its entire fleet within eight years.

Cory is investing in new barges for the delivery of waste along the Thames to its Belvedere energy from waste plant to Tilbury

Cory operates more than 50 barges and five tug boats on the River Thames, which are used to transport residual waste from waste transfer stations along the river to its 750,000 tonne capacity EfW in Belvedere near Erith.

The barges are also used to transport residual waste from Belvedere to Tilbury to be processed into aggregate for the construction industry.

Design

According to Cory, these new barges will have a more efficient design as well as improved safety features. Every barge will be able to carry 20 waste containers containing a total of 250 tonnes of waste – “thereby removing the equivalent of 70 lorry journeys”.

The first barge will be delivered in six months’ time, with a further two barges delivered at six-month intervals after this initial delivery. Staff with over 30 years’ tenure with Cory will be given naming rights for each barge.

Commenting on the investment, Cory’s chief operating officer Julian Walker said, “Cory has a long and proud history of operating on the Thames, and this investment demonstrates our commitment to the capital’s ‘green highway’. The investment will allow us to maintain and expand our river-based operations and continue making the most of the River Thames in years to come.”

Cory works with a number of local authorities in London including including Hammersmith and Fulham, Kensington and Chelsea, Lambeth, Wandsworth, Bexley,Tower Hamlets and the City of London.

The company is currently seeking to build a second EfW plant at the Belvedere location in east London (see letsrecycle.com story).
