VIDEO REPORT: Work to clear the former site of Waste4fuel Ltd in Orpington in south east London began this week (1 November) with the first truckloads of waste from the site having been removed.
Removal of the estimated 18,000 tonnes of waste that remains on the site comes after the land was acquired by Bromley council this summer. The entire cost of the acquisition of the land and the clearance of the waste is set to total close to £2.7 million, much of which will be met by the Environment Agency.
The local authority and the Agency have been working toward the clearance of the site at Cornwall Drive since 2014 after the site was abandoned by the previous operator Waste4Fuel.
Waste
The site had been used to store waste such as tyres, plastics, cardboard, metals and paper for processing into refuse derived fuel (RDF), but numerous fires had broken out and concerns had been raised by residents over the amount of waste having built up at the location close to a number of residential properties.
Removal of the waste is being supervised by Veolia, with much of the material being taken to a site in Orpington operated by Kent waste firm Pinden where the waste will be sorted and separated to remove potential recyclable materials, processed for energy from waste or prepared for landfill.
