On-demand waste clearance company Clearabee has acquired Derbyshire-based skip hire services firm SKIPBAG for an undisclosed fee.
Launched in 1999 by brothers Lance and Jim Chapman, SKIPBAG claims to have been one of the first skip bag providers in the UK.
Daniel Long, co-founder and managing director of Clearabee, said: “SKIPBAG is a fantastic brand which has provided a convenient, low-cost alternative to traditional skips for more than 20 years, and is now recognised as a leading provider of waste clearance services in the UK.
“We are thrilled that SKIPBAG is now part of Clearabee. This acquisition complements our existing services and expands our reach and customer base across the UK.”
Following the acquisition of SKIPBAG, Clearabee has forecast sales of more than £21m in 2020.
The company was ranked as the fastest growing waste management firm in the UK in 2018 in the Sunday Times Fast Track 100 league table.
Growth
SKIPBAG sells bags to customers online and through a network of stockists. The company also arranges collection of the bags once they have been filled.
Based in the East Midlands town of Ripley, it is to retain its brand profile so as not to disrupt the flow of its trade to tradespeople, businesses and domestic customers across the UK.
Co-founder Lance Chapman said: “It has been a pleasure to see the SKIPBAG business flourish and expand since it was founded.
“Clearabee shares similar values to us and I am confident that the SKIPBAG brand and service will continue to grow as part of Clearabee.”
Fly-tipping
In the wake of recent media attention, fly-tipping and the regulation of the crime has become a hot topic for governance. A taskforce dedicated to tackling serious and organised waste crime was launched last month (see letsrecycle.com story).
Mr Long sees the crackdown as providing the potential for growth for businesses such as Clearabee.
He told letsrecycle.com: “Regulation helps users of waste removal services distinguish the bona fide companies from the bad operators.
“As the UK’s largest clearance company, Clearabee provides customers with the reassurance of using a national, trusted brand, and is well placed to benefit from the strengthening of regulation.
“Regulations will encourage greater use of these kinds of on demand services.
“Fly-tipping can take many forms, so an affordable and convenient solution with rapid removal of the bag means waste is visible for less time and there is less opportunity for someone else to add their waste to your skip.”
On-demand
Founded in 2013, Clearabee claims to be ‘the UK’s largest clearance company’ and says it can clear most waste streams from most locations.
The company has an in-house fleet of more than 120 vehicles and employs 285 people.
With contracts with customers including Homeserve, The Co-op and Wren Kitchens, the company undertakes more than 200,000 collections every year.
