Olleco chief cycle raises thousands for charity
The chief executive of Olleco has helped raise £168,494 for two independent children’s charities after completing a 900km cycle across the Swiss Alps.
Robert Behan, who heads the oil recycling firm, presented the cheque to Jon Howard, executive director of Ronald McDonald House Charities.
The money will be shared between the UK and Ireland Ronald McDonald House Charities, which provide free ‘home away home’ accommodation to families with children in hospital.
Mr Behan raised the funds with the help of seven friends, who all took part in the Haute Route Dolomites Swiss Alps endurance ride – one of the hardest amateur cycling in events in the world (see letsrecycle.com story). The route traverses the Alps from Geneva to Venice reaching heights of 21,000 metres.
Olleco – the renewable division of the ABP Food Group – matched the first £50,000 raised on a pound-for-pound basis.
The challenge was borne out of a personal tragedy for Mr Behan, who lost his wife earlier this year. The event was his way of “giving something back”, he said.

ReFood launches homeless charity campaign
Organics recycling business ReFood has launched a campaign to reduce commercial food waste and raise money for homeless charities over the winter months.
ReFood, which operates a number of anaerobic digestion plants across the UK, aims to make a 50p donation for every new bin collection businesses sign up to between November and January.
The recycling business is also encouraging its existing customers to contribute 50p to the cause.
A similar project launched in 2015 saw ReFood collect from 2,566 new businesses across the winter months, with £4,000 raised for charity. In total, an additional 192 tonnes of waste food diverted from landfill.
Charities involved in the initiative all work with homeless, vulnerable people, including:
- St George’s Crypt, Leeds
- Barnabus, Manchester,
- The Whitechapel Centre, Liverpool
- SHP, Dagenham
- Sunday Centre, Sheffield
Philip Simpson, commercial director at ReFood, said: “This campaign highlights two important issues over the festive period: homelessness and wastefulness. We were delighted that last year’s campaign could support the vital work these charities do, whilst promoting an important message about diverting waste food from landfill.
“With the 2016 festive period just around the corner, we’re confident that this year’s campaign will be a similar success. We’d encourage all businesses involved in the food supply chain to think about their waste strategy, and recycle any waste food, and this campaign serves to highlight that.”
ReFood adds that it is demonstrating its commitment to reducing food waste via its support for Vision 2020, its campaign to change government legislation by banning food waste from landfill.
The campaign has found support from retailers including Waitrose, Reynolds, Savoy and Ferndale Foods.
