Simply Waste summer ball approaches
Collections company, Simply Waste Solutions, is hosting its black-tie Charity Ball this summer at the Tower of London on July 6.
The event will be supported representatives from across the waste industry and vehicle suppliers including Scania, Dennis Eagle, as well as Simply Waste’s customers, including Pret a Manger, Network Rail, Heathrow Airport and Nando’s.
The ball will raise funds for Simply Waste’s chosen charity, Shooting Star Chase children’s hospice, which provides palliative care to families with children who are not expected to reach the age of 19 because of illness, genetic conditions or incurable disease.
Walk for WasteAid hits £10k
The Walk for WasteAid 2018 has raised a further £5,000 – meaning in total over £10,000 will go to support better waste management around the world.
Earlier this week letsrecycle.com reported that chief executive Mike Webster was delighted with the £5,000 raised (see letsrecycle.com story).
More than 100 supporters turned out for the 25km walk across the city of London on 23 June, which followed the River Thames from Putney to Tower Bridge.
A registered charity set up by British waste management professionals, WasteAid campaigns for increased investment in recycling initiatives in low and middle-income countries.
This was the third Walk for WasteAid, and the first in London, with previous years seeing supporters climb Mount Snowdon and Scafell Pike.
Vickery to take on Ride London
Graeme Vickery, senior policy advisor on WEEE – waste electronic and electrical equipment – at Defra, is taking part in Ride London next month to raise money for the National Autistic Society.
Taking place from 28 – 29 July, Prudential RideLondon is an annual festival of cycling which takes place in London. This year it features a new 19-mile ride event on Sunday 29 through the roads of London and Surrey.
Starting at Sandown Park in Surrey, the route makes its way through south west London, over Putney Bridge and into the centre of the capital to the finish on The Mall in front of Buckingham Palace.
The National Autistic Society is a charity which provides support and information for autistic people and their families.

Textiles donations support Air Ambulance
Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance has celebrated raising over £1 million through donations to clothing banks through their partnership with UK textile recycling operator BIU Group.
BIU Group has been in partnership with DSAA since August 2006 placing textile recycling banks across the two counties and collecting the donations made to them.
There are currently over 100 banks located at various points across the region including supermarkets, pubs, community centres and churches. According to BIU Group, all the items collected are baled and sold to organisations around the world who sort and sell the clothes or recycle them for other uses such as mattress filling or punch bag pellets.
Bill Sivewright, DSAA chief executive said: “The funds raised are certainly significant and a great source of regular income for the Charity. However, the fact that we are also helping the planet in a wider context through effective recycling is a tremendous plus point. Our relationship with BIU has strengthened over the years and we are absolutely delighted to be celebrating this incredible milestone with them.”
