Michael Eavis joins celebrations at Viridor’s landfill site
Carymoor Environmental Trust, a Somerset-based eco charity which claims to have ‘transformed’ over 100 acres of capped landfill into a species-rich nature reserve, has celebrated its 21st anniversary.
The event was attended by guests including Glastonbury Festival organiser and committed environmentalist Michael Eavis.
The charity also celebrates a new five-year sponsorship deal with Viridor, the recycling energy company which owns the Dimmer landfill site, near Castle Cary.
More than 100 schools from across Somerset visit the site each year to see the landfill site and learn of ways to reduce waste, as well as exploring some of the created habitats.
The site has more than 5,000 visitors a year who come to see the current and capped landfill sites, wildlife and range of sustainably constructed buildings at Carymoor.
Ellgia team to take on Berlin Marathon
A team of five from Cambridgeshire commercial waste business, Ellgia, are taking part in the Berlin Marathon on 24th September to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Managing director Steve Crook and technical director Cameron Murdoch are on track for a great achievement, along with their teammates Jack, James, and Jacqui.
The company hopes to raise £10,000, and is asking its partners, customers, friends, and colleagues to make a donation to help reach this target.
Veolia supports Race for Life
Resource management company Veolia has extended its service to Cancer Research UK by providing the recycling services for over 120 Race for Life events between May and October.
The service involves distribution, collection and processing of the bins at the venues where the 5km, 10km, Pretty Muddy, Half Marathon, Marathon and Hiking events take place.
This additional voluntary support backs the collection and recycling contract that covers over 600 Cancer Research UK shops across the country.
Started in 1994, Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is a series women-only events raising money for research into beating all types of cancer affecting men, women and children.
As well as managing all the waste services Veolia’s teams are also playing their part in the events, either directly as participants or as part of volunteer support teams.
LondonWaste pledges £7,000 to community causes
Mayors from the North London Waste Authority’s constituent boroughs congregated at LondonWaste’s EcoPark for the company’s charitable Mayoral Event in July.
The annual event, which started in 2006, gave the Mayors an opportunity to take a tour of the 40-acre site, led by Peter Sharpe, managing director of LondonWaste.
This was followed by a talk from Paul Wynn, chairman of LondonWaste who outlined how integral the EcoPark’s facilities are to London’s resource economy.
The event culminated with the presentation of the Company’s donation of £1000 to each visiting Mayor’s chosen charities. This year’s list of charities included: Jesus Hospital Charitable Trust, MIND, Angel Shed Theatre, Nightingale Hospice, C4WS Homeless Project, and many others.
