The confidential waste arm of B&M Waste Services has achieved the British Standards Industry’s specifications for carbon neutrality for the second year running.
Having adopted a “comprehensive carbon management plan”, B&M Secure Shredding says it first met the requirements for the BSI’s ‘PAS 2060’ in 2018, and has maintained those standards this year.
According to B&M Waste Services, it has been carbon neutral since 2011, and in following suit B&M Secure Shredding became the “first shredding company in the UK to receive the accolade”.
Paul Curtis, B&M Secure Shredding director, said: “Being carbon neutral reassures our customers that not only are they complying with GDPR through using our secure shredding service, but they have peace of mind that they’re working with a company that does all we can to reduce the environmental impact of our operations.”
Mr Curtis added: “Innovative solutions and delivering the best possible service is what we do and leading the way in the shredding industry with this accreditation demonstrates our commitment to this.”
The company’s formal carbon management plan was introduced with the help of environmental consultants Carbon Footprint Ltd, with whom B&M Secure Shredding worked to document their carbon reduction targets.
Dr Wendy Buckley, Carbon Footprint client director, said: “Year on year B&M Secure Shredding has committed to reducing its carbon and delivered a highly impressive 12.8 per cent reduction in CO2 intensity per unit turnover since their baseline year. They have done this as a proactive step, ahead of any legislative requirement.”
Wirral-based waste management company B&M Waste Services was established in 1954 and provides local and national waste collection, recycling and disposal services for clients including the University of Chester and the University of Lancashire. It has more than 200 employees.
In the past eight years the company has supported a biogas project in Vietnam, renewable energy projects in India and a project to avoid deforestation in Brazil.
