The Greater Manchester Fire Service has confirmed that police and ambulance crews attended a fire last night (August 14) at a site owned by JWS Waste and Recycling in Salford.
However, the company has since said it is operational after the “serious” fire, which has now been contained, and it will be investigating. Nobody was injured in the blaze.
At its height six fire crews fought to bring the fire under control. The service said at one point the flames were approximately 100m x 50m and led to local road closures and warnings to keep windows closed.
Crews worked through the night to tackle the blaze, which has now been contained although the fire service remains at the scene.
‘Under control’
Commenting on the fire while at the scene last night, group manager of the service, Tony Bryan, said: “Crews have done a fantastic job in containing the fire and we are working closely with partner agencies to ensure that the fire in under control and are ensuring that there is no further fire spread.
“There are large quantities of smoke into the area due to several hundred tonnes of waste involved with the fire. I must remind everyone in the local area to close windows and doors to protect themselves from exposure to smoke.
“Crews will continue to work hard into the night and the next phase of the incident will be extinguish the fire fully.”
Approximately 30 firefighters were working at the scene using multiple jets and specialist vehicles to extinguish the flames.
Commenting on the fire, Robin Tweedale, managing director at JWS Waste, said: “Due to the immediate response of the fire service and our staff, the fire has been contained to a specific area on the site. JWS Waste have focused on minimising any disruption to our customers by implementing our contingency plans and have subsequently maintained collection services and remain operational throughout.”
Mr Tweedale added: “A thorough investigation into the cause of the blaze has already commenced and we are reassured that our rigorous health and safety processes and procedures were implemented successfully.”
Previous fire
The fire comes three years since a separate fire at the site on Frederick Road in 2015 (see letsrecycle.com story).
JWS supplies skips to companies throughout the North West and describes its four acre site, which includes a trade waste materials recycling facility (MRF), as “one of the largest recycling and processing facilities in the region”.
