Biogen snaps up Tamar in AD deal

By 08/02/2018News

Biogen, a portfolio company of infrastructure investment manager Ancala Partners LLP, has acquired food waste treatment firm, Tamar Energy, for an undisclosed sum.

A number of Tamar Energy’s existing shareholders have rolled-over their investment into the combined group. The acquisition creates one of the largest independent AD platforms in the UK.

According to its website, Tamar owns and operates 11 anaerobic digestion (AD) plants across the UK.

Network

The combined group operates a network of 13 AD plants and six composting sites located across England, Scotland and Wales.

According to Biogen, working with supermarkets, the hospitality industry, food manufacturers and local authorities across the UK, the AD sites recycle over a half a million tonnes of food waste each year and provide green electricity generation of 25MW.

Commenting on the acquisition, Adam Feneley, managing director at Biogen, said: “The acquisition of Tamar Energy represents a significant opportunity to create a best-in-class anaerobic digestion business. With the support of Ancala, I look forward to a future of continued growth and investment in the Biogen platform. I firmly believe that this acquisition will provide all customers and stakeholders with an enhanced service.”

“Acquiring Tamar Energy represents an opportunity for us to grow our platform and create one of the largest AD operators in the UK.

Spence Clunie, managing partner of Ancala Partners LLP, added: “Acquiring Tamar Energy represents an opportunity for us to grow our platform and create one of the largest AD operators in the UK. The combination enables us to improve our service to all stakeholders, including customers and local communities.”

Acquisition

The news comes after last month Ancala Partners announced the acquisition of a 1.5MW AD in Edinburgh from Kelda Water Services (see letsrecycle.com story).

Magnus Goodlad, chairman of Tamar Energy, said: “We believe that there is a strong strategic fit between Biogen and Tamar which will enable the enlarged group to deliver significant benefits for existing clients and stakeholders.”

Biogen – a leading owner and operator of anaerobic digestion plants – is Ancala’s UK AD platform. Last year, letsrecycle.com reported that Biogen had been sold to Ancala for an undisclosed sum (see letsrecycle.com story).
