Biffa points to municipal awards over past 12 months

By 13/03/2019News

In the wake of reporting last week to the financial sector that its municipal performance had stabilised, waste management firm Biffa has released a summary of activities in the local authority sector for 2018.

And, the company’s commercial director, Pete Dickson, has welcomed the government’s plans to “reignite recycling” as laid out in the Resources and Waste Strategy.

Municipal wins for Biffa have included work for the East Sussex Waste Partnership

Commenting on municipal activities, Biffa said it “is celebrating a host of new municipal contract wins and extensions, following a successful year of growth in 2018.”

Contracts over the past 12 months included a 10-year contract to manage waste, recycling and street cleansing services for Melton borough council, Leicestershire, and a five year contract for street cleansing in Forest of Dean.

Biffa was also awarded waste collection, street and beach cleansing contracts by Waverley borough council and the East Sussex Waste Partnership, covering Hastings, Rother and Wealden districts. The contracts are worth £40m over eight years and £80m over seven years respectively.

In addition to these new contract wins, Biffa said it had been granted extensions for Central Bedfordshire, Winchester, Portsmouth, South Staffordshire, and Tandridge councils.

“We’re reassured of the government and the public’s ambition to reignite recycling performance improvement.”

Mr Dickson, said: “We’re delighted to have had such success during 2018 and the results are a true testament to the hard work and dedication of our teams. We strive to deliver a seamless and cost-effective service to the councils we are contracted with, and we are pleased to have the opportunity to work in cities and towns all over the UK.”

He continued: “With the recent announcement of the government’s Resources & Waste Strategy and a larger focus on waste management in the media, we’re reassured of the government and the public’s ambition to reignite recycling performance improvement from the stagnant position of recent years.

“We strive to work with local authorities to help further educate communities about responsible waste management and work together to protect the environment, both on a local and global level.”
