Antrim and Newtownabbey borough council has awarded a contract to Northern Irish waste management firm, Avenue Recycling, for the kerbside collection of organic and residual waste.

As part of the contract – which is worth just under £2 million – Avenue will provide household and commercial organic waste collection services throughout the borough and household residual waste collection services in the former Newtownabbey borough area.

The contract is for five years with an option for a further five year extension. The first stage of the contract – which has a staggered start – will begin on 1 May. It will become fully operational by the end of July 2018.

‘Very pleased’

When contacted by letsrecycle.com, Albert Magill, contracts manager at Avenue Recycling said: “We’re very pleased. It’s quite a big contract for us.”

Mr Magill explained that the company wants to ensure that the contract is carried out successfully as it is one of the few residual waste contracts which have been handed to private companies in Northern Ireland.

According to Mr Magill, organic waste collected will be sent to Natural World Products in county Antrim. Residual waste will go to landfill.

Currently, Avenue already collects garden and food waste commingled in the Newtownabbey area. Mr Magill explained that the borough area has been reorganised.

The company has invested in 10 new vehicles as part of the new contract. Avenue has also recruited an extra 20 staff to help service the contract.

Contract

When contacted by letsrecycle.com, Antrim and Newtownabbey borough council confirmed the award of the contract for the collection of household residual and organic waste to Avenue Recycling.

In a statement, the council said: “The contract will include the collection of approximately 38,000 tonnes of waste, which will be collected in 180 and 240 litre bins. The contract will service a total of 36,000 households for residual waste and 58,000 households for organic waste collection.

“Previously the residual waste was collected by the council and the organic waste was collected by both the council and Avenue Recycling.”

Avenue Recycling is a family-run firm which operates in the South Belfast area. According to its website, the company delivers waste management services to council’s throughout Northern Ireland, health boards and private companies.
