Jamie Plevin joins Wood Recyclers’ board

Jamie Plevin, managing director of R Plevin & Sons, has been elected to join the board of the Wood Recyclers’ Association (WRA).

Mr Plevin said he was was delighted to be joining the board of the WRA, which describes itself as the “UK’s trade association for wood recyclers and reprocessors”.

He commented: “I’m really pleased to have been elected to the board. Plevin have been members of the WRA for a long time and when the opportunity arose to put myself forward I jumped at the chance.

“I think the challenges that are currently facing the wood recycling industry have never been greater and I am really looking forward to becoming an active board member.”

The association explained that Mr Plevin replaces wood recycler David Laing who stood down from the position at the end of last year to spend more time with his family.

Plevin is a family run business with four sites in Mossley, Greater Manchester, Elkesley, Nottinghamshire, Hazlehead, South Yorkshire and Boston, Lincolnshire. The company processes more than 400,000 tonnes per year of various grades of virgin and waste wood materials.


Brian Gist steps up at TOMRA

Sensor-based sorting specialist, TOMRA Sorting Recycling, has promoted Brian Gist to the role of UK and Nordics managing director.

Reporting into Fabrizio Radice, TOMRA Sorting Recycling’s global sales and marketing director, Mr Gist will be responsible for TOMRA’s strategic development in the UK and in the Nordic region, which are seen by the company as key growth areas.

As managing director, TOMRA explained that Mr Gist will manage the UK and Nordic sales and back office teams, totalling 18 employees and he will continue to hold his current role as global sales director for metals.

He is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer and holds a B.Eng Honours degree in Mechanical Engineering, as well as an MBA from Sheffield University. Prior to joining TOMRA, Mr Gist worked for Allied Steel & Wire, which later became part of the Celsa Group, and Sims Group UK Ltd, where, said TOMRA, he developed process techniques to recover higher value materials.

Commenting on his new role, Brian says: “It’s a really exciting time to be taking on this role within the business. The UK’s recycling industry has experienced significant changes over the past decade. Ten years ago, huge investment was being made in multiple new MRF facilities, but those days are gone and now, other than a very small number of capital projects, the industry has shifted towards facility upgrades in order to boost the quality of recovered materials.”


Evans becomes operations director at VWS

Reading-based Vehicle Weighing Solutions Ltd (VWS) which specialises in vehicle on-board weighing, axle overload protection and bin weighing, has appointed Trevor Evans as operations director.

Mr Evans, explained VWS, has more than 30 years’ experience in the transport and logistics sector, in particular waste management systems. For the past 20 years he has worked at vehicle telematics specialists CMS SupaTrak.

Trevor Evans: “I have known VWS for many years and worked with them on numerous projects. They are a great team of people, with exciting plans for the future. I am delighted to join such a dynamic company.”

Julian Glasspole, managing director: “Trevor brings with him a huge amount of knowledge and expertise, which will benefit us in many ways. It’s great to have him on board as we grow and develop the business.”


Regional role for Collett at RVS

Refuse vehicle business RVS  – Refuse Vehicle Solutions – is strengthening its team with the appointment of Andy Collett as regional sales manager (west).

Spencer Law, managing director, RVS said: “Andy’s appointment has come at a pivotal time for us as a company, and we will make full use of his skills and experience. Our new 5-bay workshop will soon be up and running, enabling us to increase our capacity and achieve our growth plans.”

Mr West said: “I’m really looking forward to working with RVS. I have known Spencer for years and I’m impressed with the way he has developed the business. I’ve worked with refuse trucks all of my life and RVS has built an excellent reputation for quality vehicles and service.”

Involved in commercial and municipal vehicles since 1987 when he became a commercial vehicle engineer, Mr Collett started his own business (Collett Transport Services) in 1994, which developed from a mobile vehicle maintenance facility into a municipal vehicle hire businesses encompassing maintenance and refurbishment. RVS explained that Mr Collett sold the business in 2012 and has since been working as a consultant for the UK’s primary waste operators regarding their municipal vehicle provision.


Greenbanks appoints SHEQ manager

Greenbank Waste Solutions, based in Middlesbrough, has welcomed Michael Hayward as SHEQ (safety, health, environment, quality) and compliance manager, with specific responsibility for Greenbank’s health and safety policies and procedures.

With over 10 years’ experience working as a SHEQ manager, Mr Hayward joins Greenbank from electrical contracting company, Groestar and his appointment of Mr Hayward follows Greenbank’s office expansion at its Middlesbrough headquarters, which now houses a full production workshop.

Mr Hayward is the sixth employee to join Greenbank during its latest recruitment drive. He said: “I believe that bringing the SHEQ role into the business displays the commitment to providing a safety conscious work environment as well as to providing its customers with the highest levels of service.”

Robin Evershed, managing director of Greenbank said: “Health and safety has always been paramount throughout Greenbank and this is why we decided to appoint Michael for the new role.”

Greenbank explained that it offers waste management services, “from labour saving machinery to waste recycling, to companies such BT, NHS and Sainsburys.”


Marketing appointment for LKM

Kent-based LKM Recycling has appointed Simon Baxter as marketing manager. The Sittingbourne company said it sees marketing as a key building block “to drive awareness of their flexible, innovative facilities”.

Mr Baxter brings a broad experience of marketing, sales and product development from the food and public transport industries having worked for Alpro, Brakes, Kraft, Bernard Matthews and Arriva.

Commenting on the appointment, Ryan Eastwood managing director of LKM Recycling said “We are delighted to appoint an experienced marketing professional who can apply his skillset to the recycling industry. LKM is at a pivotal point where we are looking to invest in innovative recycling processes and broaden facilities. This means creating a future proof structure including marketing that enables us to be more focused on customer needs and creating awareness which results in strong growth.”
