With news of a new environmental operations chief at Boston; Linda Crichton assists with resources plan; Hadfield wood team appointment; CountyClean marketing; and CD Enviro spreads its wings.
New head of environmental operations at Boston
Boston borough council has appointed Chris Allen as head of environmental operations as a replacement for George Bernard, who retired last year.
Mr Allen currently works as site compliance manager at a McVities site in Wembley, which is claimed to be the largest biscuit manufacturing plant in Europe. He previously spent 25 years at West Lindsey district council, where he was head of public protection. This included public health, waste, street cleansing and leisure services before his move to McVities.
He helped the council achieve some of the highest recycling rates in Lincolnshire, led negotiations on a county-wide recycling contract and is “no stranger to transformation of services to improve delivery, generate revenue and reduce costs”, the council said.
Prior to that, he worked for Peterborough city council as head of community protection.
Mr Allen currently lives in Oxfordshire, and stated that he is looking forward to relocating.
Crichton to work with Defra on resources plan
One of the UK’s most experienced advisers on waste and recycling, Linda Crichton, head of resource management at the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) has been seconded to Defra to help with work on the department’s forthcoming waste and resource strategy.
Mrs Crichton joined WRAP in 2004 from consultant Enviros where she had specialised in waste and recycling projects and research.
Since then she has been involved in a wide range of activities, particularly on local authority issues for WRAP ranging from food waste collections through to the regulations governing the outputs of materials recycling facilities.
No official statement has been released by Defra but a senior WRAP official disclosed her secondment at a recent packaging meeting. It is thought that one of the topics Mrs Crichton may work on is the potential for changes to the PRN – packaging waste recovery note. Current issues include whether the funds raised could help support local authority campaigns and whether there should be modifications to the export PRN.
Defra’s waste and resource strategy is expected to be published in the second half of the year.

CountyClean Group adds marketing manager
The CountyClean Group has appointed Becky Rowland as marketing manager in the firm’s Eastbourne office.
Ms Rowland will be responsible for all aspects of the marketing strategy and will take the lead on the company’s digital and traditional campaigns. She said: “I’m looking forward to evolving CountyClean Group’s integrated marketing strategy whilst finding new opportunities for the organisation to sharpen its’ brand awareness effectiveness and further enhance community engagement.”
She comes to CountyClean Group from Eastbourne-based marketing agency, PRG Marketing Communications, where she was an account manager.
The CountyClean Group is a liquid waste management solutions company, and was founded in 2007.
Two relocations at CDEnviro
CDEnviro has announced that two members of staff in its UK offices will be moving to Australia and the US respectively.
Ryan O’Loan, business development executive based in the UK, is relocating to Australia to join the existing business development team there.
Mr O’Loan will be based in Melbourne and will develop market opportunities and provide support for new CDEnviro customers. The company explained that his experience in the landfill diversion and environmental remediation sectors of the company will be a “particular asset to the Australian market”.
And, Alan Mitchell will be moving to the US and will lead the team that is responsible for business development across the whole of the US and Canada.
Mr Mitchell will develop the environmental remediation and wastewater management markets, providing clients with innovative solutions to improve productivity, generate competitive advantage and drive bottom line profitability.
Marc Jennings, COO at CDEnviro, said: “Alan’s appointment in North America forms part of our business expansion strategy for this region.
