Potters Waste management has applied to increase the amount of waste allowed at its Bryn Posteg landfill site, allowing it to re-open after the company’s permit was suspended earlier this year.
An application has been submitted to increase the capacity at the Bryn Posteg landfill site near Llanidloes, Powys
This comes after Natural Resources Wales (NRW) suspended its permit in January 2018, which meant the Welsh waste firm was not allowed to tip any more waste in the landfill, which is based near Llanidloes, Powys.
This, according to NRW, was because “evidence showed that the site now holds substantially more waste than is legally allowed” (see letsrecycle.com story).
However, the company confirmed at the time that the site continues to be open to customers for waste reception within the materials recycling facility. Waste received will then be transported off site for disposal at one of its alternative disposal points.
Application
Potters has now submitted a ‘substantial variation’ application, allowing an additional 449,959 cubic metres of waste at the site, without increasing the area.
NRW said when publishing the application that the majority of this additional waste “is already in place on site and this variation is asking for further imports of 116,657 cubic metres.”
This would allow Potters Waste Management to fill the space that is at the site.
Under the terms of its previous environmental permit, Potters Waste Management can tip up to 75,000 tonnes of waste at Bryn Posteg every year and this must be treated in a specific way within an engineered area.
Consultation
A public consultation has now been launched and will run until October 19.
Commenting on the application, Holly Noble, permitting team leader at Natural Resources Wales said: “We have received an application to vary the permit for the Bryn Posteg waste site. This is open for public consultation until 19 October.
“We will scrutinise the proposals to ensure they don’t pose a risk to the environment and the local community, and get advice from health experts, before deciding whether or not to issue the permit.
“The permit variation will only be issued if we are satisfied that the company can operate safely without harming the environment and public health.”
Town council
Earlier this month, Llanidloes Town Council met to discuss the permit, with Councillors raising concerns over lorry movements and also how much local residents are aware of the issue.
According to a spokesperson, the Councillors present also asked the company if it can guarantee that all problems are fixed and there will be no further issues, which the company could not.
Other Councillors raised concerns about the technical nature of the documents, however, some concerns were eased when the company said it will be involved with many local community events in order to raise awareness.
