FCC Environment said today that its Allington energy from waste plant in Kent is now “operational” after a fire in a bunker at the facility earlier this week.
Kent Fire and Rescue were called to the plant on Monday afternoon (11 March) and smoke was visible outside the facility.
The fire service remained at the scene of the fire until yesterday morning. A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue said: “Crews have worked closely with the site team to effect an attack of the fire. Crews wearing breathing apparatus have used hose reel jets to attack the seat of the fire and used positive pressure ventilation fans to clear the smoke.”

Kent county council issued a statement saying that services were not disrupted. A county council spokesman said: “We received notification of a minor fire at Allington on Monday afternoon. There is no impact to services for Kent county council as the Allington plant is undergoing maintenance and our waste is being diverted to other outlets for the next two weeks.”
The fire service said that there were no injuries in the incident and that it was not investigating the fire. However, FCC Environment said today (13 March) that it is currently investigating the incident to determine the cause.
The plant is operated by Kent Enviropower which is a subsidiary of FCC Environment. It can take up to 500,000 tonnes a year of non-hazardous waste from households and businesses in and around Kent for energy recovery. Up to 65,000 tonnes of mixed recyclates and food waste are transferred off site for further separation or compost.
