A contractor has been appointed to build an anaerobic digestion gas to grid plant in Aberdeen which will treat food waste from the city, as well as agricultural material.
Austrian-based AD specialist Thöni Industriebetriebe GmbH is to construct the anaerobic digestion gas to grid plant which will produce biogas for injection into the national grid, as part of a £12.7 million contract with Aberdeen city council, awarded last month.

The plant will process 81,000 tonnes of feedstock per annum, with 41,000 tonnes comprising organic waste collected from the region.
The biogas produced from the facility will be upgraded to biomethane and injected into the natural gas grid. It will then be piped to the onsite Energy Centre at the multi-million-pound new TECA arena. The plant is designed to produce 425m3/h of gas.

TECA is being developed beside Aberdeen International Airport, and the new city bypass. The 12,500-capacity main arena will host conferences, exhibitions and music concerts.
The AD plant is one of the income streams for the development, and will receive a subsidy from UK Government which is guaranteed for 20 years, in the form of the Renewable Heat Incentive, Aberdeen city council said.
Food waste
Food waste from Aberdeen city council residents is collected in caddies, and added to brown bins which collects food and garden waste. Brown bin collections are every fortnight in Aberdeen. The council also has communal food-only waste bins mostly in the city centre, and they collect around 1,500 tonnes per annum.

Thöni is a family-owned company founded in 1964 and with headquarters located in Tyrol in Austria. The company said it has been building renewable energy facilities for more than 25 years. The company has been working closely with Target Renewables Ltd based in Ayr, Scotland, since 2013 and has built several digestion facilities in the UK, it says.

TECA
TECA arena, conference centre and exhibition building is part of the new AECC project which includes two on-site hotels, an energy centre. The entire site is being built by Aberdeen city council along with development partner Henry Boot Developments (HBD), and main contractor Robertson Group.
