Amey appoints commercial waste director
Services firm Amey has appointed a new commercial waste director, Jason Houghton, who will oversee the company’s UK trade operations.
Mr Houghton will lead all aspects of the company’s commercial waste service, including its operational, sales and customer service teams as well as recyclate end markets.
He will also oversee over 40 Household Waste Recycling Centres operated by Amey on behalf of local authorities.

Commenting on the appointment, he said: “This is an exciting time for Amey. As a business, we manage waste services from the doorstep right through to processing, recycling and creating energy from waste.
“Amey has over 15,000 commercial waste customers across the country working in a whole host of sectors. Our aim is to be an expert, one-stop shop – providing not only a flexible range of services, but also guidance and advice on meeting legislative requirements and comprehensive data reporting for customers.
“Every one of Amey’s trade sales team is CIWM accredited and we can use that knowledge to really understand what a customer needs and tailor services to them.”
Mr Houghton has over 25 years of experience in the waste management sector, having previously worked for Tradebe, Veolia and Cleanaway prior to joining Amey.

Purley Oaks CA site reopens
The Purley Oaks household waste and recycling centre in Croydon has reopened following refurbishment works to upgrade the site carried out by Veolia.
Improvements to the layout will enable the site to remain open to the public while recycling containers are emptied; the need for frequent 20-minute closures, and resulting long queues, that local residents had unfortunately got used to will be significantly reduced.

Councillor Stuart Collins, Member of the South London Waste Partnership Joint Committee and Deputy Leader – Clean Green Croydon, said: “First of all, I would like to thank all the people who use Purley Oaks HRRC for their patience and understanding over the last two weeks while the site has been closed. We know from the results of a major site-user survey that there was a lot of support for the works to be carried out, but I appreciate that the temporary closure must have been an inconvenience for many.”
Christine Stacey, Contract Manager for Veolia in South London, added: “Our team is very much looking forward to welcoming Croydon residents to the new site and helping them to dispose of their waste correctly. We hope that this improved layout will make it easier and more convenient for people to recycle household materials such as old electrical items, books, cooking oil or wood, that cannot go into standard collections.”

Carlisle issues warning over recycling in strong winds
Carlisle council has issued a warning to residents over recycling collections due to take place on Friday (23 December) due to forecasts of strong winds expected across the North West on that day.
In a statement posted on its website, the council said: “It’s great that Carlisle residents want to do their bit to help the environment but occasionally, high winds can cause problems on collection days.
“To help prevent litter and keep your community tidy, please follow these recycling tips when the weather turns for the worst: If you think the wind is so bad that a gust might tip the containers over then consider waiting until your next collection, we will collect any additional waste at the next collection.”
Yesterday the Met Office warned that the UK is set to experience a period of more unsettled weather with Storm Barbara expected to hit parts of the north and west of country on Friday and into Saturday.
Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Chris Tubbs said: “Storm Barbara is now forming in the west Atlantic and will pass close to the northwest of the UK during Friday, bringing very strong winds and heavy rain, especially across the north and west of Scotland.”
Recyclables are collected from Carlisle households on a weekly basis, either using boxes or gull-proof reusable sacks.

Mick George announces second round of Community Fund
A second round of funding has been announced as part of the Mick George Community Fund with a further £275,000 distributed to local community projects and initiatives.
Stanwick Lakes Play Area was one project to benefit from funding
This takes the total for 2016 to over £500,000, Mick George says. The projects awarded span across three separate counties, serving a wide variety of sport and community based ventures. They include:
– Boston Squash & Racketball Club: Changing Room refurbishment
– Friends of Somersham: Nature Reserve access improvements
– Rockingham Forest Trust: Stanwick Lakes Play Area creation
– Kentford & Kennett Village Hall: New community premises and playing fields
– Ringstead Village Social Club: Update Catering Facilities
– Warboys Sports & Social Club: Roofing and cosmetic maintenance
– Moulton Guide Headquarters: New Heating installation
– Wakerley Parish: Churchyard improvements
– William Scott Abbott Trust: Sacrewell Farm Camp creation
– Hampton Cricket Club: Facilities upgrade
– Weldon Parish: Play Area creation
– Cambridge Rugby Union Football Club: Changing Room & Gym project
– Eaton Socon Cricket Club: New practice nets
