Residents of Hillingdon borough council will be able to book a free collection of mixed textiles and waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) from the kerbside.
From 20 September, textile recycler and charity Traid, will be running a free home collection scheme in the borough.
Residents will be able to get bags of textiles collected from their homes, with small WEEE items included as a “by-product”, which Traid will then deposit into a bank provided by the West London Waste Authority (WLWA) for recycling.
The service will be open to all residents, including those living in flats, who are currently unable to use the council’s textile kerbside collection service.
Under the news scheme, residents will be able to book a collection of a minimum of one large bag or three small carrier bags of textiles.
Hillingdon borough councils said that profits raised from the scheme will go towards Traid’s projects to fight poverty overseas.
Partnership
The London borough of Hillingdon is within the West London Waste Authority area and the new scheme comes following a partnership between Traid and the WLWA agreed at the beginning of the year.
Traid told letsrecycle.com that the “main thrust” of the partnership remains the home collection of clothing, but will be able to separate small mixed WEEE.
The WLWA plans to eventually implement the scheme in all its boroughs, which consists of Brent, Ealing, Harrow, Hillingdon, Hounslow and Richmond upon Thames.
The scheme is already in place in Richmond Upon Thames and Harrow borough council.
Kerbside
Hillingdon borough council’s current textile kerbside collection service will run until the new scheme with Traid comes into play.
Currently, residents can order purple tinted sacks to recycle textiles, which are collected by the council’s in-house service on normal recycling collection days.
