Wheelabrator U.K and Multifuel Energy have today (3 June) announced the integration of the two businesses into a single operating group, rebranded as ‘enfinium’.

And, the company says financial close is on track to be reached for the Skelton Grange energy from waste (EfW) plant in Leeds by the end of this month.
The merger comes after the asset management group First Sentier Investors (FSI) acquired Wheelabrator’s UK arm in December 2020 (see letsrecycle.com story).
This deal came shortly after FSI had acquired the 50% stake held by SSE in Multifuel Energy, with the other 50% being held by Wheelabrator.
‘Pure play’
With the two companies now merged, enfinium says it is the largest “pure play waste-to-energy business in the U.K”, and is a developer, owner and operator of seven “strategically located EfW facilities in operation or advanced development”.
These are located in Kent, Ferrybridge 1 and 2 in West Yorkshire, as well as other facilities in Deeside, Leeds (Skelton Grange), North Wales and West Bromwich

enfinium says it “continues to execute on the company’s growth agenda” with the Skelton Grange, 410,000 tonnes per annum capacity EfW facility in Leeds on track for financial close this month.
enfinium currently processes 2.3 million tonnes of residual waste and says it is on track to deliver sustainable waste infrastructure to process 3.5 million tonnes of post-recycled waste by 2026, once all of its facilities become operational.
Appointment
The company also announced the appointment of Sir Peter Gershon as chairman of the enfinium Board, effective 1 July.
Sir Peter has held a number of senior positions within government, including the chief executive officer of the Office of Government Commerce, a non-executive director at HM Treasury, as well as leading the independent “Gershon Review” into U.K. Public Sector Efficiency.
