Robbie Staniforth joins Advisory Committee on Packaging
Robbie Staniforth, head of innovation and policy at compliance scheme Ecosurety, has announced that he has joined the advisory committee on packaging at Defra.

Announcing the appointment on Linkedin, Mr Staniforth said: “I hope to use my passion for radical policy change to assist the UK administrations in meeting their aggressive implementation timelines over the next few years.”
Mr Staniforth has worked at Ecosurety for close to ten years, working to develop services that increase recycling in the UK.
He previously has worked at the Packaging Scheme Forum as chair, and the Bristol Green Capital Partnership as chair of waste and resources.
Bioenergy Infrastructure Group names chief executive
Mr Hicks was previously previously with Viridor
Energy from Waste and biomass power supplier Bioenergy Infrastructure Group (“BIG”), has announced the appointment of Simon Hicks as its chief executive.
Mr Hicks will replace Hamish McPherson who will depart in September after nine years.
Bringing “a wealth of industry leadership experience” to the role, Mr Hicks has recently worked as managing director for recycling at Viridor.
He begins at BIG as on 1 June to deliver the “next phase of the business plan”, which places environmental, social and governance considerations “at its heart”.
Mr Hicks, commented: “I am really excited to be joining BIG at this phase in the development of the group and I am looking forward to building on the Team’s great work to date under Hamish’s leadership. As the sector looks forward to embracing the challenges presented by the transition to net zero, BIG is supremely well positioned to step up and lead the field.
“I firmly believe business growth is a journey, and that we can unlock employee empowerment, inspiration, and progression with a values-driven strategy – something I am looking forward to embedding at BIG.”
Covanta appoints director of strategy
Ms Merton spent more than 14 years with the Peel Group
Energy from waste specialist Covanta has appointed Victoria Merton as its director of strategy and external affairs within its European leadership team.
Ms Merton joins the Covanta Europe team after more than 14 years with the Peel Group where she was director of corporate affairs.
As Covanta’s business focus in Europe “moves from construction to operations and with an ever-increasing focus from both government and investors on the circular economy”, her arrival consolidates the senior team in Europe as they continue to drive forward a “sustainable growth strategy”.
Owen Michaelson, president of Covanta Europe said: “I’m delighted that Victoria has joined the Covanta Europe team. With operational plants in Italy and Ireland, four advanced construction projects in the UK and an ambitious development pipeline, Victoria’s understanding of corporate growth, government policy, carbon capture and the principles of ESG will be invaluable”.
NWH Group appoints HR manager
Midlothian-based waste recycler, the NWH Group, has appointed Rhys Donaldson as HR manager.

NWH says the appointment is “instrumental in its drive to support learning and development in all departments through a range of internal and external initiatives”.
Mr Donaldson first joined NWH Group in 2017, initially as a recruitment consultant, but “quickly became involved in the wider HR function”.

Bringing a broad skillset to the role, Rhys’ understanding and ability to engage with employees across the business enables us to deliver on our strong family values and working culture, as well as creating a workplace that is rewarding and supportive.”
