A collection crew operative from services firm Urbaser has remained in hospital overnight after suffering minor injuries when a collection vehicle overturned on the M27 motorway yesterday (21 November).
The vehicle was transporting waste collected from homes in Gosport when it overturned, and the crew member was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth along with another operative and the vehicle’s driver. Two of the crew members had to be cut free from the vehicle by fire crews.

A spokeswoman for Urbaser, said: “The incident is ongoing and an investigation is being carried out by the highway police. All of the operatives were taken to hospital after the accident. The driver and one operative were discharged from the hospital yesterday and the other operative is still in hospital with minor injuries.”
Three crews from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service were called out to the scene at 10.57 am, following the incident which occurred on the eastbound lane of the M27 between junctions 11 and 12 north of Portchester.
Collision
A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the vehicle had overturned having hit the central reservation of the motorway.
In a statement, the Fire Service said: “We received a call to a waste disposal lorry on its side on the M27 eastbound between junctions 11 and 12.
“Two people were trapped inside the vehicle and we used cutting equipment to extricate and release the two people. They were both taken to hospital by ambulance.”
Fire crews remained at the scene until around 11.46, having carried out some scene safety work – although the road remained partially closed during the afternoon.
Three ambulance crews also attended the incident, treating the operatives for leg and chest injuries, none of which were thought to be life threatening a spokesoman for South Central Ambulance Service has confirmed.
Commenting today, Councillor Graham Burgess, chairman of Gosport borough council’s community board confirmed that the local authority is working with Urbaser to establish the cause of the incident.
He said: “We are aware of an incident that occurred on the eastbound carriageway of the M27 in which a Gosport borough council refuse vehicle overturned. We will be working closely with the refuse contractors, Urbaser Ltd, to look into the causes of the incident.”
