Biffa issues Christmas recycling guide

By 22/12/2020News

Biffa is anticipating a 40% increase in recycling volumes over the Christmas period, and has moved to help clear up confusion about what can be recycled in a bid to reduce contamination.

The company said its research shows that although the majority of residents want to be more environmentally friendly at Christmas, one in three feels confused about what they should and should not recycle.

Biffa added that it wants to make recycling as easy as possible, so that waste is treated “sustainably and converted  back into useful material”.

The company released the following guide to help residents recycle the right things and reduce contamination.

Biffa also released newly filmed footage this month at its Edmonton MRF, the biggest recycling facility it operates in the UK.

This includes an interview with James Tunicliffe, operations manager at the facility, who gave a demonstration of what types of Christmas items can be recycled.

‘Double check’

Steve Oulds, national commercial manager for Biffa MRFs, said: “We know it can often be tricky working out what should go into our recycling bins, especially at Christmas when there is lots of extra waste.

“Biffa recycling centres receive about 40% more material than usual during the first two weeks of January, including a lot of things that can’t actually be recycled. Our simple guide of what to do with typical festive waste will help people have a greener Christmas this year and our number 1 tip is: always double check packaging to see if it can be recycled.”
