Eco Sustainable awarded £12m organics contract

By 22/10/2020News

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) council has awarded a 10-year contract worth £12 million to Eco Sustainable Solutions, for the treatment of the authority’s organic waste.

The contract was previously held by Eco Sustainable for three legacy councils (Bournemouth unitary council, Christchurch district council and Poole unitary council), but has now been let as part of the new combined BCP council.

The council received three tenders for the contract, which was awarded on 6 October, after the tender process began in August.

Councillor Mark Anderson, portfolio holder for environment, cleansing and waste, said: “I am so pleased that this organics treatment contract is the first large waste contract that has been let since the formation of BCP council and will continue our relationship with ECO Composting, a local company that will significantly help meet our carbon-neutral ambitions to tackle the climate and ecological emergency.

“The companies composting, anaerobic digestion and biogas technology will now treat 38,000 tonnes of our garden waste, wood waste, food waste and street sweepings for the next four to ten years.

“BCP Council already recycles, composts or re-uses nearly 54% of its waste, and this contracts flexibility will allow us to expand and build on this in the future over the whole conurbation.”

Parley

Eco Sustainable Solutions is based in Parley, Bournemouth, where it occupies a 32-acre site and four different facilities for organics and wood.

In August, as part of its expansion work, Eco agreed to a major contract to supply the Margam Green waste wood plant in South Wales with up to 50,000 tonnes of waste wood per year over five years (see letsrecycle.com story).

Last month, it also announced plans to build a 60,000 tonnes per year capacity energy from waste (EfW) plant in Parley, Dorset (see letsrecycle.com story)

Dorset

The deal with BCP councils comes soon after it was awarded a £14 million recycling contract for an initial seven years by Dorset council in March.

The company is to process Dorset’s annual 15,000 tonnes of food waste, 35,000 tonnes of green waste and 8,000 tonnes of wood waste, plus 3,500 tonnes of the council’s street sweepings.

The company has held a contract with Dorset Waste Partnership to handle the county’s food, wood and green waste since 2008 (see letsrecycle.com story).
