Viridor and Warrington in waste processing deal

By 05/10/2020News

Viridor has signed an agreement with Warrington borough council  which will see 52,000 tonnes of residual waste converted into Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) and processed at Viridor’s Runcorn energy recovery facility.

The contract, which started earlier this year, will run for an initial three years with the option of a further two years. The estimated contract value over a five-year period is £30m.

Viridor’s Runcorn EfW receives waste by rail and road and is the largest in the UK

Under the arrangement, Warrington’s residual waste is collected by the council’s in-house waste team, before it is transferred to a waste transfer station run by WSR recycling, part of the Beauparc Group, which converts it into RDF and transports it to Viridor’s Runcorn facility.

Landfill

According to Viridor, “this contract was the locally available alternative to taking the material to landfill”, and it says the contract will provide “improved economic and environmental benefits to Warrington borough council”.

Viridor commercial director, Paul Ringham said: “The key to securing this contract was the locally available alternative to taking the material to landfill. We are processing the material at our £452m Runcorn ERF, a sophisticated combined heat and power plant.  The contract will provide improved economic and environmental benefits to Warrington borough council.”

Mr Ringham added: “Runcorn generates up to 564 GWh of electricity, enough to power the site itself and in excess of 150,000 homes.  In addition, it creates 51 MW of heat for the exclusive use of the nearby INOVYN chemical manufacturing site. This contract will contribute to Warrington’s sustainability targets.”

 Goals

Ian Brackenbury, operations and commercial services manager for Warrington borough council said: “Warrington is pleased to be working with Viridor on a contract which offers a local waste management solution which not only diverts non-recyclable waste from landfill but also generates low carbon heat and power.

“The opportunity to put non-recyclable waste to work in a way which contributes both resource and energy efficiency is crucial to Warrington’s own sustainability and environmental goals.”
