Wastewise increases volumes with Esholt facility

By 24/08/2020News

Wastewise has entered into an agreement with Yorkshire Water for the operation of an open windrow composting facility at its Esholt waste water treatment site, near Bradford.

Wastewise will run the site which is based on a waste water treatment site owned by Yorkshire Water

The Yorkshire-based recycling company will operate the seven-acre Esholt site for an initial three-year period, recycling up to 50,000 tonnes per year of household garden waste sourced from the surrounding west and south Yorkshire areas.

Wastewise has employed five new staff members at the site, which was previously run by SJB Recycling. The company says it has invested in various items of recycling equipment to manage the facility, which is permitted for up to 75,000 tonnes per year of garden waste.

Contract

The agreement comes after Wastewise was re-awarded a £5.3 million  contract  with Leeds city and Bradford councils earlier this year, which will run for an initial three years.

The joint contract is part of a dynamic purchasing system arrangement with contracts awarded to Wastewise, as well as Biffa and Ryedale Organics.

As part of the deal, up to 15,000 tonnes of waste will be collected from Leeds and be delivered directly to the treatment facility, and up to 18,000 tonnes from Bradford will be collected by Wastewise from two transfer stations.

Wastewise said that the new Esholt facility means that it now handles in excess of 220,000 tonnes per annum of household organic waste across its operations.

Growth

Wastewise’s managing director James Landau, said: “We have opened two new treatment facilities so far this year which demonstrates the exceptional growth that our business is currently experiencing and which we expect to continue as new legislation is introduced to mandate the separate collection of all household organic waste.”

“We are delighted to be working with Wastewise to make optimum use of our existing asset at Esholt”

Michael Pool, operational land manager, Yorkshire Water

Michael Poole, operational land manager at Yorkshire Water, said: “We are delighted to be working with Wastewise to make optimum use of our existing asset at Esholt whilst jointly investigating further development opportunities at our other sites to deliver positive outcomes for the environment and the communities we serve.”

Wastewise operates in-vessel composting facilities in Willerby, East Yorkshire and Crewe, East Cheshire.
