By 15/06/2020News

Viridor has been re-awarded a contract to process dry mixed recycling for Ealing council, in a deal worth £10 million over five years.

The contact, which came into effect on 6 June, was agreed with the West London Waste Authority (WLWA) on behalf of the London Borough of Ealing, and will see up to 24,000 tonnes of waste processed per year.

Material under the contract will be sent to Viridor’s MRF in Crayford

The company has processed Ealing’s recyclables at its Crayford Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) for the past four years, when they were first awarded the contract in June 2016 (see letsrecycle.com story).

This was previously managed by the council’s collection contractor Amey.

Partnership

Viridor’s commercial director Paul Ringham said the company was “extremely pleased” to continue to receive Ealing’s recycling which will include glass, paper, card, household plastics and aluminium cans.

He said: “The new contract with Ealing will see some 24,000 tonnes per annum of dry mixed recycling from Ealing’s 131,000 households processed at Viridor’s Crayford MRF.

“We are looking forward to continuing our excellent relationship with Ealing and its residents, making it easier for everyone to do the right thing and improve recycling rates. Ealing continues to drive the recycling agenda forward to the benefit of the environment and its residents.

“Through Viridor’s investment in advanced recycling technology and material reprocessing facilities, we are well placed to help the council achieve its recycling targets. Residents can have confidence that their efforts at home really do make a difference to the UK’s circular economy.”

Ealing recorded a 52.6% recycling rate in the 2019/20 Defra figures, one of the highest in London.

Commenting on the new contract, announced this morning (15 June), councillor Mik Sabiers, Ealing cabinet member for environment and highways, said: “Ealing currently recycles more than 50% of household waste, which is one of the best records in London.
