With the end of the coronavirus lockdown nearly in sight, the chairman of Leeds-based specialist waste management firm WasteCare has highlighted the importance of making sure workplaces and other areas of buildings are clean.
Peter Hunt, chairman of WasteCare, told letsrecycle.com that the need for clean workplaces is not just because of the potential for people to catch coronavirus, but also because individuals “need to feel they are safe in their working environments”.

Coronavirus
WasteCare, through its CliniCare division, is a current example of a waste management provider operating in a number of fields including provision of services relating to coronavirus.
Mr Hunt says: “The need for cleaning, decontamination, safe disposal of waste PPE is going to continue to be important. Until there is either a vaccine or the whole world has caught or overcome this virus, then there is going to be a need. It is a case of more than just simply beating the virus, it is about giving people the opportunity to get back to a new normal.”
Wider environment
He continued: “As a business we believe we need to extend our services beyond our normal waste management role at these times. It is not just about waste and recycling but about the wider environment as a whole in which we all live and work.”
Mr Hunt commented that as with “all waste companies, we know how to handle hazards, we know how to deal with the unknown, so we are in a good place to assist in areas that in normal times we wouldn’t be in.”

Touch point deep cleaning
The CliniCare side of the WasteCare business is not aimed at hospital clinical waste, he said, but more at local authority offices and public areas, care homes, offices and places producing PPE with a low risk where waste needs to be dealt with properly and decontamination may be required.
Advice
“People are asking for advice and we are giving advice of how to dispose of it without extra costs incurred, if low risk keep it for 72 hours and double wrap. If there is a higher risk, particularly in care homes such as with bedding and other contaminated waste we will deal with this and also decontaminate the rooms and working areas,” said the WasteCare chairman.
He added: “Whether it is a care home, office building or council department, it is about giving peace of mind, someone won’t want to go into the room if there is a slim chance of the virus being active.”
