The Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) has said it is “pleased” with how its WasteSupport service has progressed since its launch a fortnight ago.
WasteSupport is aimed at linking the private sector with local authorities facing crew shortages or in need of help with waste services in light of the coronavirus pandemic.
In a statement given to letsrecycle.com, head of member engagement at CIWM Paul Sloggett said: “CIWM and all the partners in WasteSupport are pleased with how it’s going.

“So far, we have 277 registered users and 227 listings of products and service on offer and wanted, from all across the UK. Users and listings are growing every day.”
Disruption
The service was launched against a background of service disruption to collections such as garden waste and some recycling services, and rising waste volumes and closures of civic amenity sites.
However despite the programme launching on 13 April, some councils appear to have not sought help from the service even after being forced to stop priority waste collections such as recycling.
One council stopping recycling collections is Redbridge, which told letsrecycle.com that is made the “difficult decision” to stop recycling collections due to staff illness and isolation.
The council is promoting household rubbish and urge residents to “hold onto their recycling until the service resumes”.
Mr Sloggett remarked: “As for transactions and conversations that have taken place, we haven’t got anything to share on that at the moment. We’re going to try to get some case studies together in a short while.”
