Viridor has agreed a deal with consumer goods company Procter & Gamble (P&G) for the five year supply of post-consumer recycled plastic.
While the exact tonnage of the deal was deemed commercially sensitive by Viridor, the waste management firm said the supply of HDPE to P&G will save the equivalent of 200 million bottles of virgin plastic over the course of the contract.
Viridor’s managing director Keith Trower said Viridor has been supplying P&G with recycled material for the past three years, with volumes steadily increasing to meet its growing sustainability targets.
“The true measure of success is reflected in seeing our product on supermarket shelves,” he stated.
Mr Trower added: “Viridor is committed to delivering quality to the circular economy. Quality control is crucial to our recycling operations – this is how we ensure we can offer manufacturers competitive alternative circular economy stock as opposed to their sourcing virgin stock.”
Last year, P&G announced that it will aim to make its Ariel laundry product range reach up to 50% recycled content by the end of 2020.
Plastics recycling
Viridor has specialist polymer recycling facilities in Rochester and Skelmersdale, as well as a £65 million recycling and reprocessing centre at Avonmouth, near Bristol.
The deal with P&G follows similar agreements Viridor struck to supply recycled plastics in 2019. This includes a deal with packaging producer Klöckner Pentaplast in December (see letsrecycle.com story) and chemicals firm INEOS in November (see letsrecycle.com story).
Viridor also agreed to supply post-consumer recycled plastic to Unilever (see letsrecycle.com story).
The contract announcements come as demand for recycled plastic is set to soar as legislation on minimum recycled content and extended producer responsibility measures kick in.
Investment
Viridor’s MD of recycling, Simon Hicks, said the company’s investment in innovative recycling infrastructure was designed to match the steadily increasing demand for recycled material.
“Our investment in sophisticated recycling infrastructure will not end here. We have been very clear about our commitment to investment, innovation and collaboration to drive the circular economy in the UK, with this programme reflecting the clear preference for recycled material.”
Both Viridor and P&G were founding members of the 2018 UK Plastics Pact.
Conference
Infrastructure will be on the agenda at the Resource Infrastructure Conference, to be held on 24 March. More information can be found here.
