Police are continuing to investigate the death of a seven-year-old girl who was struck and killed by a skip lorry in Coventry on Tuesday (18 October).
The girl, who was named by police yesterday as Sophia McDonald, was hit by a ‘slow moving’ truck owned by recycling business Tom White Waste as she crossed Henley Road with her mother at around 4pm.

West Midlands Ambulance Service attended the incident within five minutes of the first six 999 calls, but the girl was pronounced dead at the scene. The mother of the victim and the skip lorry driver were assessed and taken to hospital.
The driver, who has not been arrested, is assisting police officers with their enquiries.
Paul White, managing director of Tom White Waste, told letsrecycle.com the driver had been employed by the company “for over 10 years”. He explained the driver had been queuing at a set of lights in the centre of three lanes of slow moving traffic when the incident occurred.
“He didn’t see the little girl, I understand he didn’t see her until he got out of the cab,” he said. “The police have described this as a tragic accident and he [the driver] is on leave until the situation is sorted out.”

Witnesses
Police have meanwhile appealed for witnesses to the collision to come forward, particularly drivers or passengers who were in the traffic including a ‘black taxi cab’.
The road was closed for several hours following the incident while specialist officers conducted an examination.
Sergeant Alan Wood, from the Regional Collision Investigation Unit, said: “The investigation is in its early stages and enquiries are continuing. I would appeal to anyone who witnessed what happened or has any information that could help with the investigation to contact us.
He added: “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with Sophia’s family at this difficult time.”
