Waste management charity WasteAid has announced a string of managerial changes as part of a “strategic review”, with chief executive Mike Webster and founding signatory Ray Georgeson both stepping down.
The ‘strategic review’ was announced in the charity’s board meeting last week, January 15, with a series of changes unveiled today.

According to a statement released by the charity, Mr Webster will be “transitioning into a new strategic role that retains his expertise in the charity while allowing him to better balance family and other professional commitments later in the year”.
The statement added that fellow founding signatory and trustee Ray Georgeson has “temporarily stepped down from the board to provide management support to the charity on a part-time basis for a few months and is leading on the chief executive recruitment”.
Another board change at the charity has seen a new trustee, Dr Jonathan Straight, added to the board. Mr Straight was the founder of waste and recycling solutions manufacturer Straight plc, before it was sold to to Irelands One51 Plastics (see letsrecycle.com story).
Mr Straight was described as a “well-known recycling industry entrepreneur and philanthropist” by WasteAid, and provides the board with a “depth of business experience combined with strong strategic vision.”

Commenting on the boardroom changes, chair of WasteAid, Sarahjane Widdowson, said:“We are entering an exciting period of rapid growth for WasteAid, as demand for our community-led solutions to poor waste management in low-income countries increases.
“Our capacity to respond to this demand is increasing, and the structural changes we are making reflect that.”
Commenting on Mr Webster’s new role, Ms Widdowson added: “The board of trustees is indebted to Mike Webster for his tireless commitment to WasteAid. He has made an immeasurable contribution from the very early days and the fact that we are where we are today is testament to that contribution. We are delighted to have developed a good way of ensuring the energy, skill and passion Mike has for tackling the challenge of poor waste management in low-income countries stays with WasteAid as we grow our management capacity for the next vital phase of development.”

WasteAid has said that its new chief executive will steer WasteAid through a significant period of growth for the charity, building on the charity’s recent turnover increase, which it says has jumped from £50,000 in 2017 to £330,000 in 2019.
