Three men have been handed suspended prison sentences and ordered to pay a combined £3,500 in compensation for illegally dumping waste which cost £100,000 to clear.
According to the Environment Agency, the three men dumped waste at a “major fly-tipping site” on Hulbert Road in Havant, Hampshire, which caused environmental harm due to some of the material catching fire and some contaminating a water source.

The trio pleaded guilty to dumping waste illegally at Portsmouth Magistrates Court and were handed 12-week suspended sentences.
Daniel Worboys of ‘Rubbish Clearance Portsmouth’ was ordered to pay £1,500 in compensation, while Jason Newman of ‘What A Load Of Rubbish and Sidney Simpson of ‘S&S Clearances’ were ordered to pay £1,000 each.
Investigation
The site at Hulbert Road was discovered by the Agency in September 2018, and during an investigation Agency officers found waste believed to have been deposited at the site from around 40 different tips from small vehicles. This included waste collected from housing associations, churches and house clearances, the Agency said.
Commenting after the sentence was handed down, a spokesman for the Environment Agency, said: “Their actions showed blatant disregard for the environment. These waste criminals also undermine legitimate businesses.
“In cases like this, we have no hesitation in prosecuting those involved as we want to make sure that waste crime doesn’t pay.
“We all have a part to play in stopping waste crime. We encourage the public to ask to see their waste collector’s ‘Waste Carriers Registration’ and demand a ‘Waste Transfer Note’, which states where they are taking the waste to be disposed.”
