Perth and Kinross council have acquired contracts and assets for commercial waste services from Wyllie Recycling Ltd.
The Scottish council will now fulfil all commercial trade waste contracts previously held by Wyllie, increasing the local authority’s trade waste customer base by around 19%.

Vehicles, bins, skips and machinery such as compactors have been acquired by the council, along with a front-end loading vehicle for uplifting containers.
Councillor Murray Lyle, leader of Perth & Kinross council, said: “This acquisition is in line with the council’s aspirations to be more entrepreneurial and embrace the commercialisation agenda.
“In addition to developing our existing revenue stream and generating additional income for the council, we have employed additional staff to facilitate the additional work to ensure there is no disruption to the customers who will be transferring from Wyllie.”
Cllr Lyle noted that five new staff had been employed so far, with the potential for more recruitment in the future.
Transition
Perth and Kinross took over the contracts from Wyllie on July 22, though a two-week transition period where council staff work alongside Wyllie’s employees is currently underway.
The local authority has said it will honour contracted prices until March 31 2020 and customers will retain their Wyllie containers. Some collection days will be changed for operational reasons.
The council will now make trade collections for food waste, paper and cardboard, glass and dry mixed recycling, along with general non-recyclable waste.
Focusing on plastic
Wyllie sold the commercial waste branch of its company in order to focus on its work on plastic recycling. The company carries out shredding and granulation of a wide range of plastic film products.

John Gilmour, commercial manager at Wyllie Recycling Ltd, said the sale had “not been an easy decision” but would help the business move forward through plastic recycling.
He continued: “We want to be in the strongest position possible ahead of the introduction of the Deposit Return Scheme in Scotland.
“The plastic industry and how it is used is incredibly high profile and we want to position Wyllie as a leading recycling specialist for plastic in the Tayside region and beyond.”
Mr Gilmour confirmed that no jobs would be lost due to the sale of the commercial waste service, with all affected staff to be redeployed within the company.
Wyllie Recycling operate across Tayside, Central and Northern Scotland providing waste collection, treatment, recycling and disposal services.
