Shred Station has been crowned the 2019 Waste World Cup winner, after a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory over Circle Waste in the annual industry tournament on Friday (5 July).
This year’s tournament, organised by letsrecycle.com, took place at Beaconsfield Rugby Club in Buckinghamshire, and saw 22 mixed-gender teams from across the waste sector competing for the industry’s top sporting prize.

As in previous years, the tournament began in a group format, which saw London-based Shred Station, a first-time entrant, overcome 2018 finalists Grundon, as well as teams from Brighthouse, LondonEnergy and Veolia in Group A to enter the top tier of the knockout competition.
Circle Waste qualified for the latter stages of the competition through Group D ahead of Suez, Biffa OneCall, Cawleys, MBA Polymers and Viridor.
Shred Station, which entered two teams in the competition, held their nerve in a close final held on the Enva Pitch to eventually triumph on penalties.
Winners
Other trophies up for grabs included the Plate, Bowl, Shield, Vase and Jug – with teams qualifying for the corresponding competitions based on their standing in the group stages.
The Vase tournament had a similarly close-run final, with Biffa OneCall needing a penalty shootout to decide its final against Aumen Waste Services. Biffa won 3-1.
Suez Recovery took home the winners medals in the Bowl Tournament, with a convincing 3-0 win over the Shred Station second team, while Viridor and Cawleys claimed the Plate and Shield titles respectively. MBA Polymers triumphed in the Jug tournament beating Multi Fuel Energy in extra time.
Individual challenges included the WasteAid UK Crossbar Challenge and the Contenur Wheelie Bin Challenge, with John Wrigley of Suez and Kyran Barker from LondonEnergy each taking home a £100 prize.
