Services firm Serco has signed an eight-year contract to manage waste and recycling collection services on behalf of the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead.
The new contract which begins in September 2019, will see Serco take over from the current provider Veolia, which has worked with the council since 2004.
The new contract will see the council continue to offer weekly waste and recycling collections including caddy food waste collections, blue bin commingled recycling collections and residual waste collection in a black wheeled bin, as well as the fortnightly subscribed green waste collection service.
Changes to the service will see the introduction of hybrid collection vehicles, as well as a move to collect dry recyclables and garden waste at the same time, to reduce vehicle movements. Other changes to collections will include kerbside recycling for batteries and small electrical items.
Contract
Commenting on the award of the contract, Cllr Gerry Clark, lead member for sustainability, waste services and economic development at the Royal Borough, said: “We are delighted to award this important contract to Serco following a competitive tender process. Their commitment to reducing carbon emissions and making recycling easier for our residents, while maintaining weekly collections made them a standout supplier.
“With a long history of waste collections in England, we are confident Serco will maintain the excellent quality of service to our residents with no change to weekly bin collections.”
The Berkshire unitary authority serves a population of close to 150,000 residents, in towns including Maidenhead, Windsor, Ascot and Eton, as well as rural districts Datchet and Cookham.
Managing director for Serco Environment Services, Ronnie Coutts, said: “We are delighted to have been chosen to support the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead in delivering a range of services over the next eight years.
“This award is testament to the hard work our frontline teams do each day and to the progress we are making in delivering innovation and change.”
