Sarah Poulter becomes CIWM chief executive

By 07/05/2019News

The Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) has confirmed that Sarah Poulter will take on the role of chief executive after the departure of the former deputy chief executive Chris Murphy.

The pair had both become joint executive directors in a restructure last year in the wake of the departure of the former chief executive, Colin Church. Sarah Poulter had headed up the business side of CIWM before becoming a joint executive director.

The move comes as a further restructure at the Institution, which has seen the board decide that the previous arrangement of having Chris Murphy and Sarah Poulter as joint executive directors was not “efficient”.

This meant that the long-serving Chris Murphy left the CIWM last week, and Sarah Poulter was announced as CEO.

On Friday, CIWM confirmed to letsrecycle.com that  it was to issue a statement on the restructure (see letsrecycle.com story), which was published earlier today (May 7).

Regret

Professor Margaret Bates, chair of CIWM executive committee, said: “CIWM is going through a period of change and restructure, and despite the best efforts of those involved it is with regret that Trustees have decided that the joint Executive Director arrangement was not an efficient way of working.”

Professor Bates added: “It has therefore been decided that Sarah Poulter will take on the role of CEO. As a result of the restructure, the post of Deputy Chief Executive no longer exists and therefore, with reluctance, we must announce that Chris Murphy is leaving the CIWM.

“We thank him for his long years of service to the Institution and the sector and we hope that there will be other opportunities for Chris and CIWM to work together in the future. We wish him luck in his endeavours.”

The restructure at the institution also saw a medium-term business plan drawn up in October 2018, which included selling offices as part of a “new vision and structure” in the face of an “unsustainable” model  (see letsrecycle.com story).

Membership development

Last week, CIWM announced the appointment of two membership development executives, Kate Cole and Phil Tomlin.

The Institution said that each MDE will help maintain and improve the quality of services provided member, as well as encouraging membership growth and engagement across each MDE’s region. “They will be working closely with the Regional Centres and getting involved in the design and delivery of networking, training and development activities in these areas.”
