Healthcare Environmental Services (HES) has gone into liquidation, following the issue of a court winding up order.
Accountancy and business advice firm BDO LLP was appointed on Thursday (25 April) to oversee the process, and has said it will “rapidly assess” how to address issues arisen from the Scottish company’s demise.

In a statement issued to letsrecycle.com, a spokesperson for BDO LLP said: “BDO LLP business restructuring partners, Matthew Tait and James Stephen, ‘the Appointees’, have been appointed Joint Interim Liquidators of Healthcare Environmental Services Limited by Order of the Court on 25 April 2019.
“The Appointees primary objective is to rapidly assess and confirm the appropriate strategy to address the well-documented issues raised following Healthcare Environmental Services Limited’s failure. This work will be undertaken in close coordination with the relevant environmental regulators.”
Stockpile
HES was at the centre of a case involving alleged stockpiling of clinical waste in October 2018. This led to the revelation that the government had introduced contingency plans to deal with healthcare waste which had been stored awaiting incineration (see letsrecycle.com story).
In the following months, HES was stripped of NHS work, before announcing it had closed down in December 2018 (see letsrecycle.com story).
In an announcement issued via the social media platform Twitter on Friday (April 26), HES acknowledged the news, but said it had yet to be formally notified of the status of the business.
“The directors and staff of Healthcare Environmental Services are very sad to announce that we believe the company was placed into administration on the 25 April 2019,” the statement read.
It added: “We have repeatedly tried to resolve the issue.”
HES was head-quartered in Lanarkshire, Scotland and operated eight medical waste management centres across Scotland and England.
