By 09/04/2019News

An 84-year-old man died on his way to hospital after being involved in a collision with a van at a Household Waste and Recycling Centre (HWRC) operated by Veolia in Hampshire on Sunday (April 7).

Hampshire Constabulary confirmed that it was called to the site on Fishery Close, Hayling Island at 16:45 on Sunday afternoon following a collision involving a pedestrian and a VW Transporter van.

An investigation into the incident is taking place

Police officers are now working with the Health and Safety Executive to “establish the exact circumstances of the collision”. No arrests have been made, and the police have urged anyone with information to contact them.

Condolence

Commenting on the incident, a spokesperson for Hampshire county council, said: “A member of the public was involved in a motor vehicle incident at our household waste and recycling centre on Hayling Island on Sunday afternoon.

“Very sadly the person died on the way to hospital. We would like to pass on our deepest condolences to the family. We are currently working with Hampshire Constabulary, the Health and Safety Executive and our site contractor to establish the circumstances of the incident.”

A spokesperson for the Health and Safety Executive added that it is “aware” of the incident and is investigating.

The facility remained closed yesterday but was open again this morning (April 9).

A recent council meeting stated that the Hayling Island HWRC is a ‘single level’ site on Havant Borough Council owned land, with an area of approximately 0.15 hectares located off Fishery Lane.

The HWRC has an Environmental Permit issued by the Environment Agency for use as a Waste Recycling Centre. In 2014/15 3,231 tonnes of waste was delivered to the HWRC with 81% being recycled/composted/reused and recovered. The site is permitted under standard rules to accept up to 75,000 tonnes of Municipal Waste a year
