Hi-Cone, a manufacturer of LDPE plastic ring-carriers for multipack drinks packaging, has partnered with Terracycle to offer a recycling outlet for its products.
TerraCycle is a company founded in the US, which partners with mass market companies, brands and councils to implement recycling schemes for products not currently widely collected from households. Waste management firm Suez has a 30% stake in its European activities.
Terracycle is offering a freepost recycling service for LDPE ring-carriers
Recent projects have included crisp packet recycling projects, as well as an initiative around LDPE bread bags and oral care products through a partnership with Colgate.
Projects typically involve customers being given freepost envelopes to return empty product packaging directly to Terracycle, or the establishment of collection points in public spaces.
Collection
Through its project with Hi-Cone, Terracycle will be offered the opportunity to download freepost labels to send their used ring carriers in for recycling or to search online for a collection point.
Ring carriers, such as those produced by Hi-Cone, will be processed into items including park benches, outdoor furniture and composite lumber, Terracycle says.

“It is vital that packaging producers take the lead in pushing sustainable programmes forward, and that is why we have stepped in at this stage of our own journey to champion this process with TerraCycle. We will be monitoring the progress of this initiative very closely as it rolls out in the UK, and will then assess the possibility of widening its scope further into Europe, the US and beyond.”

Laure Cucuron, general manager, at TerraCycle Europe, added: “To date, we have some 80 million people engaged in collecting waste materials across 21 countries and typically these programmes are funded by brands or municipalities. It is therefore very refreshing to have a packaging manufacturer such as Hi-Cone engaging with us and taking responsibility for the materials it sends into circulation.

In 2018, beer producer Carlsberg announced the introduction of a ‘snap-pack’ packaging design to remove the need to use plastic ring-carriers on some of its products (see letsrecycle.com story).
