Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service is changing its firefighting tactics to tackle a fire at a site operated by Envar Composting which has been ongoing since New Year’s Eve.
In a statement this morning (21 January), the Fire and Rescue Service said following discussions firefighting tactics will be changing to “offensively tackle the fire”.

“This approach could generate more smoke and odour in the short term but would mean that the fire is extinguished quicker,” the Fire Service warned.
The fire at the Envar Composting at Somersham Road, Huntingdon, started on New Year’s Eve (31 December) (see letsrecycle.com story).
Controlled burn
Up until this point that fire service said it has been carrying out a controlled burn at the site “in line with the site fire plan,” however the service said it was aware that smoke and odour generated is having a “considerable impact” on residents nearby.
When contacted by letsrecycle.com, an Environment Agency spokesperson said: “The fire at Envar Composting is continuing to burn out under the supervision of onsite staff, along with crews from Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service and the Environment Agency
“Environment Agency are working with the site operator to understand the circumstances of the fire, assessing compliance with the environmental waste permit.”
The Fire Service has advised any local residents with health concerns to discuss these with their local GP, and warned that a road closure may also be put in place depending on the levels of smoke generated.
Flagship site
Envar Composting says its flagship site in Cambridgeshire is the UK’s largest waste in-vessel and windrow composting facility, currently processing 105,000 tonnes per annum. The facility produces PAS100 and CQP certified soil conditioner through the processing of green waste, food waste, commingled food and green waste, and specific organic waste.
A comment has been requested from FGS Organics, the company which owns Envar Composting, was unavailable for comment.
