Taking place on 5 October at London’s QEII Centre, this year’s Textile Recycling Conference organised by letsrecycle.com will welcome the likes of Alan Wheeler, director of the Textiles Recycling Association, Catarina Midby, sustainability manager at H&M and Dr Einir Young, director of sustainability at Bangor University.

The Conference will explore some of the crucial issues affecting the textiles recycling sector, including a ‘big debate’ on overcoming market challenges and a look at market issues affecting used clothing exports to East Africa.

East Africa

In a special report published on letsrecycle.com last month, Dr Einir Young highighted the challenges and development issues of the East African export market (see letsrecycle.com story), an important topic which will be explored in more depth at the Conference.

Mattresses have been the subject of debate in the textiles recycling industry, with reports of a drop in steel prices combined with an increase in the cost of insurance hitting the market (see letsrecycle.com story). Jane Gardner, scheme manager at Carpet Recycling UK and Lee Foulkes, technical manager for Rhondda Cynon Taf borough, will be discussing the prospects for alternative textiles such as carpets and mattresses.

Waste improvement officer for Surrey county council, Cat Porter, will be presenting a local authority perspective on textile recycling campaigns, and the event will also feature an update on the Clothing Action Plan by WRAP’s Leigh Mapledoram.

On a more global scale, President of the Textile Recycling Association, Alan Wheeler, will explore clothes and textiles recycling in the UK, Europe and beyond.

There will also be ample time to network with colleagues and exhibitors and to raise issues with the expert speakers during the day.
