Biffa boosts retail offering with corporate head
Biffa has announced a boost to its “retail offering” with the appointment of Sandra Gibson to head of corporate accounts in this sector.
Ms Gibson joins with more than 20 years’ experience managing blue-chip retail accounts and said the company, will help drive Biffa’s partnerships with major UK retailers as well as facilitating growth of the firm’s market share in the retail sector overall.
She previously spent three years at Bunzl Retail Supplies, part of multinational distribution company Bunzl, where she was responsible for managing corporate retail accounts including Asda and Co-op.
Daren King, sales director at Biffa said: “Meeting waste and recycling targets forms a large part of many retailers’ CSR strategies and this market is a key focus for Biffa’s future growth. We are delighted to bring Sandra on board, she has a wealth of experience in retail and logistics so fits perfectly with our ambitions to grow this sector still further.
Ms Gibson commented: “This role offers me the challenge of applying my previous retail knowledge to a new sector like waste management.”
Burdis joins Oxfordshire waste team
In the local government sector, Steve Burdis has been appointed as principal officer for waste contracts at Oxfordshire county council.
Mr Burdis has a range of previous local authority experience including being the director of the Dorset Waste Partnership from 2011-2016 which involved bringing together and integrating the partnership.
Prior to his post at the Dorset Waste Partnership, he was head of waste management at Dorset county council from 2006 to 2001 and previously held the position of waste management officer for six years at Shropshire county council.
Mr Burdis said that he was “delighted to be joining the team at Oxfordshire”.
Andusia promotes Mark Terrell to director
Andusia Recovered Fuels has promoted general manager, Mark Terrell to be a director of the company.
He joined Andusia in October 2017 as general manager with responsibility for the day to day running of the business and leading the management team. Over the past year, Andusia says it has experienced a surge in growth into other markets and different types of recovered fuels, resulting in the growth of the team and particularly with this promotion of Mr Terrell to Director.
Mr Terrell has worked in many waste sectors with expereince at Thames Water, Veolia, Lafarge, The Environment Agency, SUEZ UK (formerly Sita) and most recently Ricardo.

Fabrication role for Fitzpatrick at UKCM
Container repair and refurbishment company, UK Container Maintenance (UKCM) has appointed Mark Fitzpatrick to the role of Fabrication Manager, with the aim of improving its services and increasing efficiency.
Mr Fitzpatrick, an experienced welding engineer, joins the company with over 25 years of relevant industry experience.
Throughout his career, said UKCM, he has worked “on a range of impressive projects which include the Royal Navy’s Type 45 Destroyers, QEC and Prince of Wales aircraft carriers and London and North Western Railways, where he restored steam engine locomotives.”
The appointment follows UKCM’s capital investment in a new state of the art 80,000 sq ft factory with a refurbishment plant including wash, shot blast, spray, fabrication and repair and modification booths, along with a container testing facility.
CEO Emma Elston MBE said: “We are thrilled to welcome Mark on board, his career in the industry brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our team, which will help us to streamline our services supporting the company and our customers.”
Amur appoints waste relations manager
Amur, which is part of the AB Agri animal feed group which supplies over 100 AD plants across the country with feedstocks and other services, has appointed Jason Ward to expand the company’s relationships with waste management firms and food waste producers.
Mr Ward has over 14 years’ experience in the waste industry, including seven years in corporate and national sales at Biffa. He comes to Amur from Andigestion where he sourced feedstock for the
newly-built plant in Gloucestershire and introduced county-wide food waste collections, said Amur.
And, Mr Ward said: “Amur’s understanding of nutrition and AD biology makes it a unique player in the industry. As well as managing our own plant, we are actively working with operators across the UK to supply lab testing services, consultancy, additives, trace elements and enzymes designed to enhance the performance of the plant. We also blend materials to create a consistent, reliable food waste ‘soup’ that is great feedstock for AD plants.
New ops manager for Russell Richardson
Sheffield confidential waste and recycling firm Russell Richardson has appointed a new operations manager, Simon Harrison.
He takes over takes over “the smooth running of the Attercliffe company’s nationwide collection fleet and warehouse and its mega shredder, which destroys up to seven tonnes an hour.
Mr Harrison, 39, and from Huddersfield was previously a deputy manager for global logistics company XPO Logistics. He said: “I join Russell Richardson as it goes through a period of unprecedented growth, an exciting time,” adding that he is looking forward to playing a “crucial role in the company’s forthcoming relocation to a new site in Tinsley.”
Red Industries welcomes Bowen as MD
Waste management firm Red Industries has announced the appointment of a new group managing director, Nigel Bowen.
The company said that Mr Bowen, brings a wealth of experience from the waste industry having previously been group operations director at Augean plc and managing director at Castle Environmental.
The position of group managing director has been created following the successful growth of the business over the past two years, which has seen Red Industries acquire their first landfill site, open new head offices, and significantly expand their processing capabilities, the company noted.
Chief Executive, Adam Share, is to continue to maintain primary leadership and overall management of the Red Industries Group. In a statement, the firm said that “the appointment of Nigel as Group Managing Director will enable Adam to concentrate fully on the future expansion and strategic development of the company, including new acquisition opportunities, and hand over more of the day-to-day running of the business.”
Central European appointment for DS Smith
DS Smith Recycling has announced a new senior appointment to support its “ambitious pan-European growth plans” with Hans Werner Brocke joining the business in August as managing director for central Europe (recycling).
With extensive industry experience, he joins DS Smith from his role as a director of recruitment agency Stanton Chase. Previously he has held roles at packaging specialists EuroPack and Smurfit Kappa, as well as gaining experience in the food industry with Bernard Zabler GmbH.
Jochen Behr, head of recycling at DS Smith, commented: “We’re delighted to welcome Hans to the team. With considerable experience gained at senior management level, he brings a deep understanding of the paper, packaging, and recycling industries.”
